Beyond the Maze

Chapter two: the bonfire

After Newt introduced me to everyone it started to get dark. We sat at the picnic tables just talking until an Asian boy with black hair came over. "Hey greenie!" He said to me. "The names Minho." "I'm Adrienne." I say back. He nods and looks at me then to Newt who's sitting across from me.

"You ready for the bonfire tonight?" Minho asked me. "Bonfire?" I asked confused. Newt chimes in and says "Yeah we usually have them every night and on days we get new greenies." I nod. "So you wanna go help me get some wood greenie?" "Okay" I say as I stand up.

I follow Minho back into the woods I ran into earlier. We gather some sticks until we can't carry any more. I then follow him to a spot where there is already a giant pile of wood stacked up. This must be the bonfire. We lay the sticks down into the giant pile of sticks.

The sun goes down completely and suddenly I hear a loud sound coming from all sides of the maze. I turn to see what was happening, the maze doors were closing. I watch as they close us all in for the night. Then I felt an unexpected hand on my lower back. It was Newt, who came and stood beside me.

"Here let's let them light the fire." He told me as we both backed up to get some distance from the fire. Minho and several other graders tossed sticks they had set on fire. Causing the whole pile of wood to burst into flames that eventually calmed down into a nice fire. I saw on the other side of the bonfire a circle of boys all shouting into the middle.

I walked over curious to see what they were doing. There were two boys in the middle throwing punches at each other and trying to knock the other one down. One of the boys has very narrow weird eyebrows and an almost all buzzed head. The crazy eyebrowed boy knocks the other boy to the ground. He looks over and spots me.

He walks over and grabs my wrist and pulls me inside the circle. "You wanna try?" He asked me. "Try what?" I ask confused on what was going on. "We have to try to knock the other one down and who ever does get knocked down looses." I nod. "Okay" I say pushing one side of my hair behind my ears. He puts up his fists and charges me.

I scoot out of the way causing him to miss and almost hit the boys surrounding us. He gets a mad a look on his face as he charges me again. He pins to the ground causing me to hit my head hard on the ground.

I stand back up to try to stick up for myself. He comes over and punches me causing my lip to bleed. I charge at him but I'm very weak since my head won't stop pounding. He grabs my shirt and tosses me on the ground causing me to hit my head again. Everything became blurry and started to spin.

I couldn't see anything and I felt very weak. Suddenly I hear someone yelling. Newt. He's yelling at the weird eyebrowed boy. I can't make out anything that's being said. He then comes over to me asks if I'm alright. I blink a bunch of times to try to get my vision back.

I rub my eyes with my hands and my vision comes back. Newt grabs my hand and helps me up. "You alright love?" He asks me. "Yeah I think so." "Let's go over here away from them." He gives a mean look at the eyebrow boy.

He puts his hand on my lower back and leads me over to a log. We sit down and are silent for a minute or two. "Who was that?" I ask wiping some blood off my lower lip. "His names gally. He's pretty mean so stay away from him okay."

He looks me in the eye. "Okay" I say. I sigh and look down at the grass. I start fidgeting with the grass. All of sudden he grabs my hands and looks me in my eyes. He says gently "are you sure your okay love?" I suddenly get really nervous when I notice how close he is to my face.

I nod and say "I'm fine" I try to give him a small smile. A couple minutes later I start to slightly shiver. I notice I'm only wearing Jean shorts and a tank top. Newt sees that I'm cold and takes off his hoodie, leaving him in dirty white undershirt. He then hands the hoodie to me and says "here." I take the sweatshirt and pull it over my head. My eyes then start to get really heavy so I rest my head on his shoulder. He puts his arm around me and rests his head on mine.

We both fell asleep until Minho came over and started yelling "AWWWW how cute!!" I jolt awake at the loudness of Minho's voice. "So love birds you guys planning on going to bed soon?" He asks us. "Where will I be sleeping?" I ask because we never talked about that earlier.

"Adrienne you can sleep in my room and I'll sleep on the hammocks." Newt says as he stands up. He offers me his hand up and I take it. "Okay well get some sleep you too." Minho says looking at us and then he walks off. "I'll walk you to where you'll be sleeping tonight." He says as he put his hand on my lower back again.

We finally reach a little shack made of wood. "All the keepers get rooms but since your the only girl here we'll have the builders build you one tomorrow." I nod. We're both standing in front of the door nervous about what to say. "goodnight newt, thank you for everything today." I say as I hug him. He seems surprised at first but then accepts the hug. "Goodnight" he says to me and walks off towards the hammocks.
