Might I really dare?

2 years ago we were making post-graduation plans,     listing places we had to see, concerts we had to attend. 20 months ago we were driving around, dreaming of life and setting five year plans. 18 months ago we were grabbing tacos and I recited your order without a second thought, without even blinking. 16 months ago I was rushing out of my house to meet you at the edge of my street, so my mother couldn't see. 13 months ago I was begging you to stay, while you stood there with a rigid face. A year ago we graduated while you stood far, far away. Three years ago we met, went from strangers to family. And a year ago we went from family to strangers.

Today I was at a party, much like the one where we met. Surrounded by people you had never met, never known, in clothes you had never seen, never touched. I wanted to leave but I spotted a stranger. A little too enticing, a little too quirky, a little too handsome. I wanted to leave but I stayed.

New love is the best cure for old love gone bad, they say. Might I really dare?
