"Summer, it's me. Can we talk? I really want to talk to you right now, please. Just give me a chance. Call me back." This was the third time that I had called Summer and all three times it had led to voicemail. I hadn't been prepared to see Summer react like that. She was always a talkative person who was ready to work things out. I was ready for her to be furious but not that disappointed and gloomy. I was laying on my bed, apprehensively tapping my fingers on my phone. Staring at the screen waiting for her to call me back was doing me no good. I decided to dial one of my close friends, Nick.
"Hello?" Nick's voice came on the line.
"Hey Nick. I need to get away from home for a bit. Are you busy?" I bit my lip in hopes that he was free.
"You're lucky I was just about to go play some basketball. Meet you at the court in 10 minutes?""Yeah, see you in 10."
Nick was probably one of the most athletic people that I knew. He played basketball, football, and ran track. He was a few inches taller than me and wore athletic clothes 24/7. Nick was shooting a basketball at court three where I joined him. As he went for a layup, I blocked his shot and swatted the ball away.
"Hey Nick! You still can't make a layup!" I joked as he missed again.
"Oh shut up Carter! I bet you still can't make freethrows!" Nick shoved me a little, and I reacted by chucking the basketball at his head.
"Cut the crap!" I yelled. "You know, it's been too long since we've played basketball. Why is that?"
"I don't know. I haven't played all summer until now probably because I am lazy."
Nick attempted to dunk and actually made it.
"Still got it!" I yelled as he pumped his fist in the air.
"So what's going on Carter? I heard about you and Summer. It's about time that happened!""About that. We're having some problems right now." I admitted before taking a swig of my icy water as we sat down on the hard, aluminum bench.
"What kind?"
"Well, she was gone for almost a month at summer camp. I went to Aaron's party and saw Bri."
"Uh-Oh. Bri is bad news." Nick ran his hand through his black hair which caused it to stand up in all directions.
"I know." I groaned. "Long story short, we danced together then she kissed me."
"Well that doesn't sound good. Don't you know the rules? You're only supposed to be kissing one lady if you have a girlfriend. But if you're single like me, that's a different story. I can kiss as many as I want." Nick spun the ball on his fingertip.
"Anyways, what do I do? She won't answer my calls. I love this girl, and I regret what I did."
"Tell her that then. First, give it time. She needs time without you calling a million different times."
"Alright I wont call. So I'm just supposed to wait for her to come around?"
"Exactly. Just wait. Let's get back to basketball now okay? Take your mind off of it."
"Sure, sounds good. And thanks."
"Don't mention it." Nick punched me in the arm as we jogged back onto the court. My palms felt sweaty. I had a lump in my throat. I was a mess. Summer had finally agreed to see me and talk after several agonizing days of ignoring my calls. The previous day was filled with so many different things.
I kept wondering, "Is this it? Is she going to want to break up with me?" We had been going out for about 2 months even though it felt much longer. I didn't want it to be over between us.
