"Spider's eyes, apple seeds, ground garlic, hot embers, rotten melon, spicy tofu- ah, yes!" The sorceress cackled maniacally as her minions tossed various items and ingredients into a boiling cauldron. "Such a perfect mix. Those bastards will never know what hit them!"
"Aye, miss," a minion hissed.
"Silence!" She thrust her hand out at the creature. A burst of energy threw the unfortunate minion to its knees.
"A bit of sugar, spice, and everything not nice!" The sorceress laughed. "A curse! No crops, no livestock, and no people! See how Mangolia likes me now!"
The mixture started bubbling and fizzing, the liquid turning a poisonous green. The room filled with the smell of smoke and burning flesh.
She chanted a spell. The liquid rose up in a huge sphere and popped like a bubble. The contents vanished midair.
"Soon, they shall all tremble before my name- Ava!"

Across kingdoms, the curse started to take hold. Princess Heather of Mangolia watched in horror from her balcony as trees in the distance rapidly turned black. Their leaves fell in the early summer and their blackened branches shriveled up towards the trunk.
The same thing happened with the grass and all the crops. Even the most promising wheat fields were reduced to nothing but dry husks in a matter of hours.
It wasn't long before cattle, chickens, goats, pigs, and sheep started dropping like flies. They were perfectly healthy one minute- and dead the next. Their flesh was turned rotten instantly and inedible. The rivers' and streams' clear waters were tainted with rotting corpses and feces.
People were panicking. Families who sustained themselves solely by farming or raising livestock were on the brink.
After several days, not one of the advisors or scholars could pinpoint exactly what was happening. Theories ranged from a rampant parasitic fungus to sulfuric rain to poor soil.
Or one more suggested by an old advisor- a curse.
People started getting sick. Their skin would turn a horrifying shade of reddish-purple, and the irises of their eyes would become white, whiter than the sclera was. After that, they would begin sweating and coughing profusely. They would become unable to eat or drink, and die of starvation or dehydration days later.
It was a slow and awful death.
A/N: I advise you not to picture it in detail
The crop-livestock-human malady started at the outskirts of the Mangolia, slowly creeping inward towards the capital.
And nothing could stop it.
The clouds turned darker and thicker, blocking out the sun. Day turned as dark as night.
Everyone was desperately searching for a cure. Pressure increased tenfold on the king and his court to find a solution before they all became subject to the living nightmare.
They tried everything, but nothing even slowed the spread. People reaped the wheat months early, but the young stalks and grain withered in storage. The same thing with preslaughtered meat.
Soon enough, there was no food in the kingdom that hadn't been spoiled by the mysterious plague. They relied on imported goods from the nearby kingdoms, but everyone knew that wasn't going to last forever.
Including Princess Heather.
She'd heard about a legendary magic cure hidden somewhere in an unnamed swamp far away. The storybooks said it could instantly heal any plague or curse, but no one has found it for thousands of years. Everyone who's gone seeking it was never seen again.
But then again, desperate times call for desperate measures.
Heather was determined to find this cure, even if she had to go to the ends of the earth to do it.
