                                                                                     Natasha's POV

I see her try to stand from the corner of my eye and I watch her small frame get blasted by the hard metal bullets.

She collapses again and it's all I can do to not cry out. A bullet embeds itself in my shoulder and I bite my tongue to keep from making any noise.

Another bullet hits my side and I trip, landing on the ground. I know the end is coming but I'm not scared. Just sad. If only I could have saved the girl, that would have wiped out some of the red in my ledger. It's amazing just how much I see myself in her.

Suddenly I hear shouts and bullets firing. The Hydra men look surprised and scared as they turn towards the sound. S.H.I.E.L.D. agents bust through on all sides.

My best friend Clint Barton rushes to my side while the others continue to mow down men. Clint is about to carry me back to the jet but I have to make sure they get her first!

"Clint please wait, you have to make sure she's ok! She got shot when she was trying to help me! You have to get her out! She's dying!"

"Who?" He asks, confused by my semi hysterical words.

"Her" I respond pointing at the small girl who is crumpled in a tiny ball. Her skin is pale and there is a pool of blood around her. I can't tell if her chest is moving or not.

"Oh"

He beckons Steve over and asks him to take me to the jet while he goes over to get 117. He picks up her limp body in his arms and carries her, bridal style, toward me. I black out.

                                                                                      117's POV

Beep, beep, beeeeeeeep. I groggily raise my head. Wait what? I'm not dead??? I'm in a sterile white room with tubes inserted in my arms. I turn my head.

Romanoff is sleeping in a chair beside me. I feel slightly dizzy and nauseous. My stomach aches and my back feels stiff and painful. I'm about to try and say something when she stirs.

Her stormy blue eyes blink open as she stretches from her curled position. Then she looks at me. Her mouth opens slightly in shock, her eyes filled with relief.

"You're finally awake!" She whispers.

I try to shrug but moving my shoulders hurts too much. She looks at me concerned and I, seeing that moving hurts, decide to speak.

"I'm fine" I rasp. She nods at me before speaking again.

"Fury would like to see you after you are completely recovered." She instructs

"I'm recovered" I reply trying to get out of bed.

"Yeah, no." She responds with a smile. I slump back down after a futile attempt. I roll my eyes and she smirks.

"So, what happened?" I ask after a moment of silence. She freezes as if reliving a painful memory.

"You were gone, I didn't make it out but at the last moment S.H.I.E.L.D. came and rescued us."

I raise an eyebrow at the 'us' in her statement and can't help but say. "Don't you mean you?"

She inclined her head toward me but didn't answer my question.

"You came back for me?" I ask barely audibly.

She smiles and nods her head. "I couldn't leave you! You wouldn't leave me! We said together or not at all"

My eyes start to fill up and a single tear rolls down my cheek. So this is what it feels like to be cared about. I can barely say anything but I squeeze out a single.

"Thank you"

5 days later

I push myself in a wheelchair toward HQ. I was instructed to meet Romanoff and Fury there. When I enter the room, their heads turn toward me and they stop talking.

Fury clears his throat. "Agent Romanoff and I were just discussing what to do with you next."

My throat tightens and I nod. I look at Romanoff but her face is passive giving away nothing. I look back at Fury.

"I would like to extend my offer to you for becoming a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent once more."

This time the offer seems more appealing and less daunting, maybe they would accept me. I look at Romanoff again and she gives me an encouraging grin and a wink. I nod at Fury and give him the ghost of a smile.

"I accept" I say confidently. With my head held high.

Maybe I can't wipe out the red that is in my ledger, but I can definitely try. I wonder briefly what the future holds but I push it from my brain. Today I can start again!
