"Mother!" I heard Klaus shouting downstairs. Huh, it looks like he noticed that we've got company. Neighbours, actually. I was surprised as well when I saw them, but not in a bad way. I thought it would be great fun, and I wasn't getting too much fun since my mother, Esther took things under control. She made it her life's mission to make us at least pretend like an actual family. Which was kind of absurd, since we were 1000 year old original vampires, with only a little bit of humanity left. And not to mention that we have been enemies in our whole lives, with my older, psychopath brother,(whom I actually like) randomly stabbing us and making us lie in a coffin for a few decades.
Yeah, we weren't exactly the perfect family. We drank blood, we killed people for fun, with almost no remorse. Acting like a family, the way humans do, was never exactly one of our plans. When me and Finn got out of that coffin Klaus has put us into (again) we wanted him dead, or at least suffering, to be honest. The last thing that we expected that now, less than a month later, we will be here, together, in our family home, while our ,,mommy" is cooking dinner for us. But that was Esther's plan.
And Mother was never the person you could argue with.
" Who are these people? And why are they here? In that house?" I could hear him asking it, trying to not lose his temper. He doesn't like new peope. Or any people. At all.
" These people, Niklaus, are our new neighbours." Esther replied calmly.
" Please tell me this is some kind of a joke, Mother" I heard another voice. Elijah. He, on the other hand, never lost his temper, but I knew him well enough to know he wasn't too pleased by the news.
" This is not a joke, Elijah. In fact, it is serious, and I would like to say something to all of you. So come down here, Kol and Rebekah, I know you both are listening."
I laughed silently. Mother knew me, after all, I was his son. And Rebekah was just like me, maybe a bit more dramatic, but very similar.
We exchanged a look as we opened the doors to our rooms, and followed Mother's orders. It was a lovely scene they had down there. Esther, with a bowl in her hand, just like a regular mother, Klaus walking angrily up and down, Elijah in a suit, of course, and Finn, not getting into the conversation, because he's watching TV. Again. He had missed 900 years of civilization, and the television is his new obsession, since he doesn't really feel the desire to socialize. He is really amazed by TV-shows and movies, though.
" Watching The Gladiator again?" I asked him sarcastically.
" Keep quiet, Kol, it's my favorite part" He said, not taking his eyes off Russel Crowe.
" Alright, brother, I'm terribly sorry" put my hands up laughing. "He doesn't have to take part in our family talk, Mother?" I asked.
" Give him time, Kol."
Yeah. Give him time. That was the only thing we were doing, and my oldest brother seemed to be fine without communicating with his family. He preferred movies. Especially Russel Crowe-movies. I couldn not imagine what will happen once he finds out about TV-shows.
" Mother, this is the last time I'm asking this, who are these people?" Klaus folded his arms angrily.
"Niklaus, calm down, please. These people are...well, I am not entirely sure myself. They are a family, mother, father, and two daughters. Lucia Fell is a member of the Fell family, which, as you already know, is one of the founding families. She had lived here as a child, then she went to NYU, met her husband there, and they settled down there. Now, for some mysterious reason, they decided to come here."
"Something's bothering you." Rebekah was right. Mother wasn't as sure about this as she pretended to be, and we all felt it.
"You are right, Rebekah" Esther nodded. "I feel something....strange. A strange...some sort of energy, since they arrived. It revolves around the girl. The older one. Megan, I think. These parents are giving so terrible names to their children these days..."
" You think she might be a witch?" Elijah looked at her questioningly.
" Yes, she might be. In fact, she probably is. That wouldn't be a problem by itself. The problem is, I feel something...more. I can't explain that to you, but that's the truth."
"Also, she physically can't be a witch" I interrupted. "There are no witches in the Fell family.
"Very good, Kol" Esther looked at me with something quite similar to being proud.
"So, what do you want us to do about that, Mother?" Klaus, who was silent all this time, finally asked.
" Wouldn't it be easier if I would just...you know." I imitated a neck-snap with my fingers. Klaus and Rebekah both laughed. It was the easiest solution after all. And the only solution we have ever known. But things were different now, with Esther here. We almost felt like five year-olds again, who had to ask for permission for literally anything they do. And it wasn't so far from the truth.
"Kol! Behave yourself! You are NOT killing anyone, anyone in this town, those days are over, am I clear?" Esther stared at me strictly.
" Sure thing, Mother." I nodded.
"I have an idea" Klaus looked at me with a smirk on his face. And I knew him well enough to realize immediatlely that it didn't mean any good, not to me.
"Kol here",he stood behind me and patted me on the shoulder,"could use a little distraction. Maybe he should watch over this girl, get to know her, see what she's up to. He could be our spy."
"Absolutely no way." I shook my head."
"Excellent idea!" Esther said, at the exact same moment.
Damn. I am so screwed.
"Another idea, Mother!" Rebekah smiled at Klaus behind Esther's back."Since the girl is sixteen or maybe seventeen, she will probably be spending most of her time at school. And Kol looks no older than eighteen, which leads us right to..."
Klaus broke out in laughter, and even Elijah couldn't smother his smile.
Oh, god. How much I wish I could tear their limbs off.
"It is decided then. Kol, you will start going to school from tomorrow. At least Rebekah will have some company." Esther smiled, then turned back to...whatever she was cooking. Klaus and Rebekah high-fived, while I buried my face in my hands. A teenage girl. Get close to a teenage girl. Goddamnit.
I hate teenagers.
"Do you need me to pack you some lunch for tomorrow, brother? " Klaus asked as he walked out the door, going god knows where.
I was wrong. Literally nothing was different from the time when we were five year-olds.
