I backed up a little because I could tell she was sick. I walked over to the telephone and dialed for the family doctor. I quickly remembered that today was Sabbath and he wasn't in his office. I needed to go see him at his house, it might be the only way I could save my mother.
I ran past the kitchen when I felt someone grab my shoulder. I turned around and there was Charle. I closed my eyes and inhaled, this was the way my father had taught me to vent.
"Where do you think you're going boy?" He asked in a deep voice.
"OPEN YOUR EYES!" He screamed after I forgot to answer him the first time.
I studied his outfit for a fraction of a second. It was some of my fathers knickers that were cleary very much to small on him, a crimson blouse with a little embroidered symbol under one of the pockets on the front. Of in the corner I saw Kayden and Alva standing in the door frame. Kayden looked it my eyes with the most sympathetic look that went straight into my heart. Alva on the other hand, was sticking out his tongue.
I snapped back into reality moments later when he screamed once more in my ear asking where I was going. I shoved my hands into my pockets and looked down when I remembered where exactly I was going.
"My M-mother is sick Step father." I said shyly "I was going to get Doctor Vilrick to come visit her and give her medication..."
He looked like he was hiding a smile "Don't bother the Doctor...Victoria will be fine."
I walked off with attitude and I just knew he would grab my shoulder and stop me, but he didn't.Half of me wanted to go and comfort my mother since I knew without the medication she would most likely die. The other half wanted me to go into my room and pretend my life never happened.
I decided to do both, first my mother. She was talking to me a little but about crazy things, she was delusional. I calmed her the best I could and told her I loved her and she was my biggest inspiration. As quickly as I walked in, or it seemed, I started to make my way out of the room.
"Ellie! Wait!" She yelled as loud as she could but it was still quiet.
I turned my body around back to my mother.
"Please come over to me...." she grinned
She put something into my hand that I easily recognized. "Elliot, Before your father died, he gave this to me to give to you...When you asked about it I lied when I said it must've been lost. I've had it and have waited long enough to give it to you. Even with Charle and the boys you will always be the man of the house in my...and your father's eyes." she told
I thought she was getting better since she was actually speaking. I was unfortunately very wrong, because that night my mother passed away. The everlasting guilt still rests in the deepest part of my heart. I think of all the things I could've done to prevent it.
I should've not listened to Charle and ran off to the doctor anyway. The medication could have helped her and my mother would've been able to stop Charle from treating me like a slave the rest of the time I lived with him.
Like I said, since my mother died I was their personal slave. I couldn't do anything about it so I accepted it and did my best to please the scab (step father). I had many tasks such as, clipping the lawn, raking leaves, milking the cattle and gathering eggs, and the list goes on and on.
Alva was much like Charle and was cruel, but I felt he still had hope to become what his father wasn't. Kayden stayed kind hearted though and would try to help me do my chores. Stepfather always stopped him though and pushed me down onto the hard ground for talking to him and telling him to help me with the work. The thing was I would never even think of asking Kayden to help me, Kayden was just Kayden and had a very kindred spirit.
