Babs finished wrapping the perfect gift as she hummed delightfully over the sound of her parents arguing loudly downstairs. Today was special. Nothing could ruin it, not even her parents. It was special for two reasons; the first was because it was Richard's birthday. The second was because that meant four more months until her own.
When she was done wrapping the gift, she gathered up her backpack, and headed downstairs to see if it was time to leave yet. At this point she didn't bother listening to what her mom and dad were fighting about, because it seemed to change every day. Sometimes her mom would throw something, but nothing seemed too bad. After all, Babs wasn't above throwing things when she was mad, either. Given, she realized that it wasn't the best course of action to get what she wanted, so the tactic was used more as a way to express just how angry she was. But her dad did his very best to remain calm, even if he ended up shouting just as loudly as her mother.
Barbara pulled herself up onto a high stool in the kitchen, and swung her legs eagerly.
"What time is it?" She asked, butting into the argument. Both of her parents ignored her, and continued their yelling match. She sighed. "What time is it?!"
"Babs, be quite!" Her mother snapped, face flushed almost as red as her hair.
"Barb," Jim said, frown deepening. "Really? What did she do?"
Barbara shifted in her seat, beyond capable of feeling uncomfortable as she looked between the two of them expectantly. At lest she had their attention.
"Is it time to leave yet?" She asked hopefully.
"No,"
"Yes,"
"What?" She asked.
The Commissioner gave his wife a wary look before helping their daughter off the high stool. "Yes, Sweetheart. It's just about 4:30; we should have been gone half an hour ago. Go run and get your shoes."
"Already got em," Barbara lifted her foot to show off her sparkly runners with a satisfied grin.
"Wonderful, honey. I guess I'll drive you. Let's go."
Babs scooped up her backpack, and took off towards the front hall. She barely heard her parents promise to finish the argument later before her dad came around the corner with the car keys.
She was practically radiating excitement. It was her first time being over to Dick's house, and it would be just the two of them for his birthday. When he hadn't come to school for two weeks after they were kidnapped, she was beginning to worry that she would never see him again. And oh, the joy she felt when he finally showed up. They were near inseparable the entire day, and every one following up until today. Sure, Ashlynn and Tina were her two best friends, but they were ... girls. Or whatever that was supposed to mean. Barbara did feel a little weird thinking about the fact that her best friend was a boy. Ashlynn and Tina definitely thought it was strange, but they were probably just jealous.
The ride to Wayne Manor was shorter than she thought it would be. The gates were already open when they arrived, welcoming them up what had to be the longest driveway in existence.
"Alright, Barbara, remember your manners, please," Jim Gordon said, pulling to a stop near the front steps. "Shall I walk you up?"
"Yes,"
They unbuckled, and climbed out of the car. Barbara grabbed her dad's hand as they stepped up to the front door. Her dad rang the doorbell, and less than a second later, it was thrown open by the birthday boy himself.
