Author's Note: I wrote this purely for fun, though I don't remember why. I found it as a prompt on pinterest but twisted it a lot.

Looking back, I had a pretty cliche life. I was born the eldest daughter to the King and Queen of a humble kingdom, though the biggest on our continent. I was taught how to be a good wife, how to run a country, proper manners, blah blah blah... all the boring Princess stuff.

You may be wondering what could set this life astray, what kind of villain is going to make this even more predictable.

When I was eight, I somehow managed to get away from my caretaker while taking a walk through the woods. I had always been rebellious, the "problem child" of the family. My younger brother, Lachlan, and I would escape the castle and steal food from the market square.

I ran, jumping over exposed tree roots and ducking over low-hanging branches. I laughed as my caretaker yelled my name over and over again. I didn't care about how frightened she sounded.

I was having the time of my life when I felt a tug on my brown-blonde hair, yanking me back. I yelped loudly, surprised by the sudden pull. I turned, ready to tell off who would do such a thing to a Princess. I crossed my arms as my head tilted with slight confusion. I didn't recognize the girl that stood before me, though she looked about the same age as I was.

The girl cleared her throat. "You're a Princess, right? Princess Kiara perhaps?" She asked. I remembered the simple, green dress she wore and her strange white hair that was tied back with a cloth. She smelled of spices and woodsmoke, the scents clear as day. It almost frightened me how pale and ghastly she looked, her eyes a deep-set, dark green color that I could almost feel sucking the breath out of my lungs. My hand went up to my chest on instinct.

Recalling my Princess training, I nodded firmly, standing straight with my shoulders pulled back. 'Don't be afraid, state your dominance,' I was taught. "What is it to you? Why'd you pull my hair?!"

I clearly remember the look on her face. "If I know you're name, it's only fair if you know mine. I'm Thais."

"What do you want?!" I was starting to get impatient.

Instead of answering, Thais pulled out a cloth bag. The stitches seemed to be farther apart and a faint green glitter fell through them. When the glitter hit the ground, small pieces of grass sprouted on the dirt path. Thais paid no mind to it and opened the drawstring bag, dumping out a dime-sized amount onto her palm. The next thing I know, she was muttering something under her breath and blowing the green glitter so it blurred my vision.

I coughed, slightly confused, and set off guard. There was no sign of Thais. In the distance, I could hear my caretaker still called my name. Suddenly feeling lightheaded, I yelled a quick "Over here!" and fainted, hitting my head against an exposed tree root.

The next time I awoke, my mother was staring over me. I couldn't quite place her expression... disappointment? I don't remember much of what happened after besides my mother yelled at me; to be more mature, to act like the royalty I was, to be more like Elise, my younger sister who was already set to marry the Prince of a nearby kingdom. I slept again.

A few hours later, I heard someone open my balcony doors. I was still drowsy with sleep and, to this day, I wasn't sure if what happened was a dream or not. I saw a figure, a small one, enter my bedroom from my balcony doors. I could barely make out their silhouette walking toward my bed. Frightened, I pretended to be sleeping.
