The pungent smell of hospital disinfectant entered her nose. She was in the cold, sterile hallway alone. Every few seconds, a new chill rippled over her small frame. The thin jacket did her no justice.
A group of nurses ushering a medical bed whizzed past her. All of them making quiet the racket. The girl was so small that the nurse almost didn't see her sitting there in the tacky hospital chairs.
She knew the nurse was attempting to talk to her, however the words sounded almost alien. She was sleepy too, making the words even less comprehensible. The nurse was beginning to give up, thinking the child was deaf. She only reacted once the nurse tried the swinging pupil test, the bright light pulling her out of the trance-like state. The girl was only able to mutter one word before the feelings of sleep overwhelmed her senses,
"Jake..."
