"Make sure to watch the eggs, the don't take long."

I grab the spatula and flip the sunny side ups onto a clean plate. Almost finished, just have to wait for the water to boil for grits. Today me and Angel are on breakfast duty. Just a simple southern meal with all of the fixings.

"Remind me to buy more tea when we go to the market" I say while mixing whites for the younger kids.

Angel nods in recognition. Personally, im fine with  a pop-tart or bagel. Every since ive been living with the Andersons' I've put on a bit of weight. During her 'nice years', Linda would cook instead. Now the task is on me And angel. Often times they eat at nice places or get take out for the little brat and themselves. Angel picks us up something on the way home most of the time. Speaking of Angel,

"Hey what were you going to say last night? Something about the pro-"

"Lower your voice!" she whisper-yelled.

I immediately shut up. Motioning for her to pause, I creep around the corner to make sure the old bats are out of ear shot. I give her a thumbs up and she continues.

"I was thinking we could tell them we're going to help set up pastor James's party at the church."

I raise a questioning eyebrow.

"Tell me more"

" It starts at 2 so we'll have to leave the house at about 1 o'clock"

"Well what if she finds out we never went to the church?"

She looks at me with a smirk. I can see the wheels turning in her head.

"That's why we leave at 1 and not 1:30. That way we have almost a half hour to waste talking to sister Mary-Margaret." she then turns back to the stove.

I look at her astonished. The perfect plan actually. You see, Sister Mary-Margaret is near casket age. Her memory is so bad, she'll think we had been their all day long. Technically we wouldn't even be telling a lie. We did show up to help, we also left to protest.

"I wish I would've thought of that." I say.

We both erupt into laughter.

"I bet we-"

"Are you two wretches finished?"

I immediately stop talking. Linda comes and takes look around. Satisfied, she turns around and calls for rick and the little brat to come say grace. Angel and I join them at the table. After we thank the lord, we begin eating. Rick and Linda inhale their food at an inhumane pace. Disgusting pigs.  While attempting to re-gain my appetite, a small finger jabs into my side. I try to ignore it until he does it again. One day im going to chop those clammy little fingers clean off.

"What's the matter Bradley?", I say in the sweetest voice I can muster.

He just points at my plate. We play a game of "Point to what you want until I guess it". Finally my finger lands on my untouched biscuit. I glance across the table before resting my gaze on him again.

"You've already had one Bradley. You can have some more eggs-"

Out of no where he breaks out into a hissy-fit. The world record fake tears pool in his eyes. This kid I swear.

"If he wants another, give it to him." says Rick.

"But there are none lef-"

"YOU HEAR WHAT I SAID. I don't give two birds if its the one on your plate!"

I flinch involuntarily . The room falls quiet. Even Linda has looked up from her morning paper. As of late, He has become more aggressive. Only towards me it seems. Angel stands up from her seat and takes her plate to the kitchen. After giving the brat what he wants, I follow in pursuit.

" At this point I don't care if we get caught, we are going to that protest."

Marching around my room, I pack my bag with extra clothes and water. Next I go to my closet to look for some sunglasses. Angel is sitting on my bed with her phone.

" Well you better hurry and get ready. We leave in 5 minutes." she says before disappearing into the bathroom.

After double checking my list, I open up my window and throw my bag to the same spot on the yard as hers. I grab Angel and head down the stairs.

"Mom, me and kiki are leaving now, we'll be back before 8."

We both knew that Linda could care less what time I came home, Angel on the other hand. I grab out bags from the yard and get in. She starts the car and as per usual, I take care of the music. The church is only 10 minuets away so reach there in no time. In the south, each town has 5 churches minimum.

I step out of the car and is instantly greeted by Kate, Mary's granddaughter. We decide to make small talk while heading up the hill to the white building.

"So how early are you guys leaving? I know you're going to that protest later"

Me and Angel look at her surprised.

"Don't worry, I won't tell. I wish I could go, but-"

She motions we head back to the little old woman to say goodbye.

"Exactly 10 minutes, good work." I say to Angel while we walk back to the car.

We stop by a Exxon and grab a few snacks for lunch. Swapping positions, I climb in the drivers seat and continue the drive. We arrived into town fairly quickly. It might've been because I went 15 over the limit the entire ride, it might not have been.

As soon as we entered downtown, we could sense the vibe. Kids were playing with bubbles. A group was handing out face mask, others had chalk in their hands. I park the car in then nearest spot and run to go join the fun, leaving Angel behind.

When I got to the center of the square, a group of people come up and ask me to answer a few questions. A few minutes later, a group of freshmen ask me to do a tik-tok with them. I help a few small ones fill up their super soakers too.

" Your hair is so pretty....It's like a bush!"

I look down. At my feet, was a little blue-eyed girl. My mouth fell open. I know she's small but a bush? That's all she could think of?

"Actually my hair is fluffy! You know why?"

The girl nods her head rapidly. I motion with my finger slowly and bend down to her level.

"It's because im a princess from a country called Nigeria."

Her eyes grew twice in size.

" Really? I know a princess that you look like! Tiana!!!" she begins jumping and clapping her hands.

"I know her, she's my cousin. But you have to promise not to tell. Now lets go find your mommy."

"But I don't have a mommy...."

My heart stops.

"I have two daddies!!"
