All For Nothing

There was a knock on the door, and Anne asked me to open it because she was busy washing dishes. I turned the lock and twisted the knob to a very confused, attractive guy. "Um... hello. I'm Gemma." I offered, lamely I might add. I stepped aside to let him in, and closed the door.

"Hey Gemma, I'm Harry!" He said, smiling and stuck out his hand for me to shake. As soon as my flesh touched his, it was gone. I felt a shock course through my veins, and wondered if he felt it too.

"Harry! It's so good to have you back!" Anne had engulfed him in a hug and I awkwardly turned around and went back upstairs to my newly renovated bedroom. I'm not sure when, or why, but I started crying. The old me kept telling the new me it was Claudia all over again. That they never really loved me. I was just something to occupy them while Harry was away. As much as I knew it was wrong to revert back to Bex, I felt it was the only thing I could do. Gemma was all for nothing. Who was I kidding? Reinvent myself? Was I really that naïve?

Lunch

"Harry, tell Gemma---" I cut Anne off immediately.

"It's Bex. Not Gemma. And I don't want to listen to Harry's stories. I don't care about his 'adventures' or his friends. I just want these next two years to be over and done with so I never have to see any of you or my real family, if I can call them that, ever again." I regretted it instantly after seeing the tears forming in Anne's eyes. The Bex side of me took charge and I went up to my room, locked my door, and turned up the stereo really loudly.

An hour later, Harry came knocking on my door. Foolishly, I opened it. He went straight to the stereo and unplugged it. Then he shut and locked my door. After sitting at the foot of my bed, he said, "You made my mom cry. She really loves you, and she wouldn't stop talking about you. Every skype call, every phone conversation, you were all she talked about. How far you'd come, how you changed everything about yourself, how she couldn't believe that you went from hating everything to liking her in a matter of days. Don't tell me that's not true. It wasn't all for nothing. I was really excited to meet you, the Gemma you, anyway. Bex, my parents need you. I have a feeling you need them too. If you really don't love them, I'll leave you alone. I know you might not be aware of this, but you're beautiful, not a mistake. You're loved, not a waste of space. You might've made bad choices, but you've also gotten a second chance. Not many people get those. I'll see you at dinner?" I nodded. Harry made a move to get up, but I stopped him. I hugged him saying, "Thank you, Harry. And, it's Gemma. You're right, I'm wrong. I just felt like... I don't know. Friends?" He pulled back from the hug, and said, "Friends. How about we get to know each other better?"

"I'd like that. Is there a reason you're traveling the world with your friends?" Harry laughed.

"Um. Yeah, actually I'm in a band. We're called One Direction. My parents didn't tell you?" He said, awkwardly smiling and rubbing the back of his neck.

"No, I had no clue you were in a band." I laughed.

"We're kind of famous... do you have a cellphone?" He asked.

"No, I told Anne I didn't want one because I had no friends as Bex, my parents don't love me, and I'm with her and your dad all the time. There's no point..." I said truthfully.

"Oh. Well, we'll have to get you one, I guess. You have a friend now." He smiled cheekily after that.

"I guess I do." I said.

"The lads have to meet you! Maybe when we skype later, you can join!" Harry was really enthusiastic about me meeting the "lads"...

"Harry, tell me about your band. And your bandmates! Are any of them attractive?" I noticed he stiffened a bit when I asked if they were attractive. I wonder why... Maybe he's gay or something? Does he like one of his band mates?!?

"Maybe? Well, we were put together on a show called the X-Factor and finished third. We got a record deal and now have our second album out. That's why we're on tour." Harry explained.

"Oh." Was all I said.
