'CAUSE YOU'RE A SKY, 'CAUSE YOU'RE A SKY FULL OF STARS
The Saturday night was hazy, and so as Avery's memories. She couldn't pinpoint why there was an empty feeling in her heart. All she knew was that; it has something to do with her memory.
Albeit to what she was feeling, she still smiled at Pax who was also smiling at her, bragging about how amazing he was at counting stars. It was a little game they played. Every night, Pax and Avery meet at the old neighborhood park to compete, who among of them, can catch the most shooting stars. In a figurative way, of course.
The neighborhood was quite small and old, made up of a small Chinese restaurant and a local hospital.
"Two!" Avery said as she looked up to the sky, leaning on Pax's shoulder. He kissed the top of her head, enveloped a protective arm around her, and said: "I already caught five, slowpoke." He teased.
"Funny" she said as they continued to stare at the sky, seeking out for stars. Though, folklore of many cultures describe shooting or falling stars as rare events. Meteor showers can be seen at different times of the year. Depending on, when will the Earth pass through the comet's or asteroid's path.
The weather can also hinder a good view of meteor showers that is why Avery doubted that they would find any.
Avery suddenly remembered; "You still haven't told me why you ditched me yesterday," she accused Pax. "Why?!" her voice barely above whisper. She turned to look at him.
Feeling her gaze on him, Pax did not look back, instead he continued to stare the sky.
"It was nothing serious" he whispered back.
Sighing, her gaze focused on him in tears. He suddenly turned to look at her which caught her off guard. He stared at her. They were lost in each other's eyes, unaware to the shooting star that passed by seconds ago. Pax's face was mere inches away from Avery's. His breath rasped against her face every time he exhaled.
He wiped the tears that escaped from her eyes, cupping her face as she leaned in his touch.
He kissed her forehead.
"I love you" said he.
"I love you too" she whispered back.
He raised his head to study her. Their eyes gazed at each other for drawn out moments. Excruciatingly slow, Pax leaned in. Every caught on and withdrew out of panic. Pax retreated, feeling embarrassed. Explanations got caught in his throat which caused him to choke up.There is a thick tension around them which is suspended on their shoulders. Avery thought that it was probably her fault, unsure of what to do. Avery rested her head on Pax's shoulder, taking in his cologne-the one he wore for over a year now. Slowly, his tense tensed shoulders relaxed.
"Six," he snickered. Avery rolled her eyes, playfully, bumping Pax's shoulder with her own.
Pax laughed heartily. She turned her head to peek at his face. His eyes squinted slightly, and his teeth were on full display. His eyes sparkled under the blanket of stars that engulfed them.
Not that she would've admitted it, but the brightest star was right next to her.
To be continued...
