regret of jacob barber - defending jacob

intro - ava and jacob

jacob barber, ava's best friend. they did everything together. they've known each other since they were in middle school. on the first day of 6th grade they were both new to the school and they had their lockers next to each other and talked everyday before school and in between class periods. since then, they spend almost every single day together. now they are in their freshman year of high school. (yes i know, in the show jacob is in 8th grade.)

it was a gloomy monday morning and ava rolled out of bed to get ready for the school day. she texted jacob to ask him if he was awake and wanted to walk to school with her. they walk together almost everyday unless ava takes the bus. he texts back immediately, telling her that he would be at her door by 8am. once he arrived, ava pulls on her backpack and walks out the door. ava and jacob have always had a little tension between them. they liked each other but never said it out loud to one another. they just kind of...knew it. as they were walking through cold spring park on their way to school, ava asked jacob if she could sleepover at his house tonight. she sleeps over at the barber household quite often, her mom travels and her dad left when she was younger. the barbers adore ava and are grateful that she has always been there for jacob. jacob is kind of shy and has trouble communicating with other peers. jacob tells ava that she probably could but he'll have to text his dad first to make sure. they arrive at school and go their separate ways. ava has math first period while jacob has biology. they have one class together, english.

after a few periods of the day has passed, they meet up in the hallway and walk to english together. as they are walking, ben rifkin slams jacob against a nearby locker and says "what's up jake? have you found a boyfriend yet? that's right, no one wants you. no girls especially, but that's okay because it's pretty obvious that you like boys." while ben is face to face with jacob, ava pushes ben off of him and says, "what the fuck ben? you piece of shit. don't touch him again." jacob slides by avas side and thanks her with his eyes. "okay ava, whatever, stick with your gay boyfriend." ben says with a smirk. ava frowns and walks away with jacob. "jake, don't listen to him. seriously, he's just an asshole." jacob looks down at the floor and nods. she looks over at him and his cheeks are a bright red. he's embarrassed. avas heart breaks for him. she adores jacob and hates seeing him go through the pain of people teasing him. he doesn't deserve any of it, she wishes she could do more for him.

after school jacob runs up to ava and lets her know that her dad said she could sleepover for the night. andy barber loves ava so he had no problem with her staying over. they walk home and have a seat on the couch and turn on a movie. it's pretty cold in the house, ava is shivering. jacob takes notice and pulls her closer towards him. she lays her head onto his shoulder while he gently rubs her back. these are one of the moments that go unspoken, they know that they have some type of affection towards each other.
