ELEVEN

As the finals draw closer, the amount of time and hard work to be put in has been doubled. The sleepless nights and the cups of coffee are free-flowing, and there's really no time to wallow in self-pity and nurse a heartbreak. Or at least, that's what Aga tells himself. He's too tired to think about it anyway.

After all, he's still a father, has responsibilities more than just those he owes to himself, and he knows he has to stop being selfish. He can't ignore all responsibilities in favor of drinking himself to stupor just because his heart feels like being smashed inside his chest every day.

But he's getting better, he has to be.

The pain in his heart is now a quiet murmur he is able to drown with the sound of his daughter's life or the drone of the busy life he's living. And although he still aches every time he attends her classes—his heart is a creature of habit, is what he's been justifying it with— he is able to tell himself that things will get better. There's longing, slicing through his very heart and every vein, but he's learned to live with it until it feels like nothing more than a dull ache.

She doesn't have to know how much he misses her even when she's just there, a mere few feet away from him, how much he longs for his arms to be wrapped around her because he once had her in his embrace and he'd wished since then that he hadn't let go.

She doesn't know that he's akin to a man in a desert, thirsty, and she's the water that will quench his thirst.

She doesn't know that her name is the only thing in his mind, heart, and his lips, and she's the one... the one who's etched into her very soul, and right now, right at this moment, he's experiencing an upheaval of every step he's taken to get better...just because she's running in his mind again.

She doesn't know that he wants nothing more than her, to be with her, to be there when she wakes, and be there when she closes her eyes at night, holding her.

She doesn't know, cannot know, and he won't tell her that either.

"Daddy, I'm ready," Leighton says, waking him from his reverie, and he looks at his daughter who is looking back at him with innocent eyes. He hopes she never feels the kind of heartbreak he feels right now.

"Did you bring everything you need, anak?" he asks her, as he takes her bag from her and rummages through her things - books, toys, water, snacks, and an extra shirt. He makes sure she has everything she needs to be able to entertain herself. Aga had to bring Leighton with him that day because her classes were suspended for the day, and Helen or his sisters couldn't take her in - which left him with no choice - so he had to make sure that she won't get too bored.

"Remember what I said, Leigh?" he asks her in reminder, his voice and his expression stern.

"Yes, daddy," she tells him with exasperation. "Wag malikot and wag makulit because you have an exam today, so dapat behave."

It's not an exam, not really, just a diagnostic test to prepare them for the finals, but he had to explain it to Leighton in a manner that she would understand. He can't afford to be taking the diagnostic test and worrying over what Leighton can get up to.
