"Oh my goodness, Alexis!"
Amara is obviously happy to see me and I'm delighted to see her too. "Hi, Amara. How have you been?"
She's driving me from the airport. Avelyn called me to say that she flew to back to America to help me get settled in and offered to pick me up, but I declined. I'd rather spend some time with this bag of crazy beside me. I have really missed her.
"It's been a while," she says, momentarily taking her eyes off the road to glance at me.
"Yeah, it has been ages in fact," I reply.
Two days ago, I had sent her directions to where the apartment Avelyn said she arranged for me is. Believe me, I'm flabbergasted. It turns out Grand Arts studio is inside Grand Arts estate. It's large, alright. Apparently they are not only into artwork but also music. I chose a small apartment since I'll be staying on my own. I don't want to take too much space.
"I really wish you could do this with me, Amara." Amara is another wonderful artist. To be honest, I believe she is better than I am at pen art. Also, it would be nice to have my old classmate with me in this new environment.
"Sorry, but Grand Arts is very big and it's only for celebrities. Any non-celeb who comes here is strictly on invitation. I'm glad you got in though. I told you you'll be a star one day." She has a small smile on her face.
I scoff and say, "It's just art."
Her expression suddenly becomes serious becomes serious. Amara is looking freaking serious, this doesn't happen often. "Alex, you may not know it but everything about you is art. Your appearance, even the things you touch become art. It's who you are. You will make it big. Sometimes I wonder why you're so interested in medicine."
"I want to save lives," I respond after some silence, and it's true. Not just that, I love to know how the body works, the history and systematics behind diseases and I find it fascinating. I may love art but it will forever be a pastime thing to me or just a hobby when I finally start practicing medicine. No matter how I love it, I don't want to be stuck behind a surface, drawing.
"Okay then, suit yourself. I'll see you soon." I didn't realize that we're in front of what will be my apartment. The apartment is a bungalow, better for me, at least I don't have to climb stairs or use an elevator.
"Okay, bye," I say before getting down from the car.
Amara helps me bring my suitcase down from the trunk before bidding me farewell and good luck. Once inside, I look around. If the outside looks simple, then the inside is damn breathtaking. The exterior of the apartment is painted blue. It's a color that seems like it is electric blue but not quite. It has a nicely tiled porch with a hanging chair.
Inside, is making me feel at home indeed. The living room is painted blue like the exterior but a brighter shade of blue. On the walls are tiny fine drawings. The floor is tiled with grey marbles, like the porch. The furniture is grey as well but a shiny sort of grey.
Carrying my suitcase, I pass the kitchen towards the back where I can see the single bedroom. This place has white walls. They are so white they are looking pure and blinding. There are no tiny drawings here and for that, I am grateful. The last thing I want is to wake up in the middle of the night and see white walls with tiny drawings which will invariably look like some kind of witchcraft symbols in the dark.
After looking around, the weight of my exhaustion hits me like an overwhelming boulder. Quickly discarding my suitcase in a corner, I throw my phone on the bed and plunge in. The white sheets and fluffy pillows make me feel like I haven't slept in ten years. The soft mattress gradually calms my body down. I'm about to close my eyes and join the welcoming sleep when I remember that I haven't called my siblings to tell them I have arrived. Groping for my phone, I quickly text each of them before finally closing my eyes to sleep.
