Camila sat nervously in the waiting area for Lita's dance teacher to come and speak to her. What did she want to tell her? Was Lita having problems? Or was she so talented they were going to bump her up a class? Maybe she'd used bad language, Camila knew she wasn't always good at not saying curse words in front of her. She checked her phone, she had been waiting fifteen minutes. Shawn had taken Lita and Max for icecream, which meant Shawn and Lita ate icecream and Max just somehow covered his little face in it. Please God, don't give him chocolate again, she prayed. She was annoyed at missing out on the little family time she had left before she started her tour. She had been rehearsing like crazy lately, and she had even taken Lita along to her dance rehearsals, hoping Sara and Calvit and the dancers could inspire her, even though Camila knew her daughter was a purist, and it was all about ballet for her. They watched the animated movie "Ballerina" at least once a week at the moment, although it would never replace Frozen 2 in her affections.
"Camila, hi," Nora, Lita's dance teacher, stood at the door to her office, smiling, and inviting her to come through. She was a beautiful Latino woman in her late thirties but looked much younger, wearing a blue leotard and flesh coloured tights, a sheer skirt over the top, and a long knitted cardigan. Her hair was in a ballerina bun, smooth and shiny, and she wore glasses at the moment, as she sat on the corner of the desk and indicated Camila take a seat. She was smiling, that was a good thing wasn't it? Or was she trying to soften the blow?''
"I guess you're wondering why I asked you to come, and I'd like to say it's nothing to worry about, but I guess it's something you will need to judge for yourself. Yesterday in class, the girls and boys all got to perform their personal choreography piece. They could choose any dance style and music, and we videoed them all for the parents as a gift, but I thought you might like to see this first."
"Oh yes, Lita practiced a lot for hers. She told me she was doing a ballet piece, but it was going to be a surprise. She wore headphones so I couldn't even hear the music coming from the studio." Shawn had included a small dance studio for her and Lita in the renovations of their new home.
"Well, no, actually, she didn't. But lets just play shall we?"
Nora pressed play and Camila watched with growing horror. The costumes and choreography of "My Oh My" looked fine when she did it on stage, but seeing a six year old do her version of it, the inappropriate lyrics, complete with Da Baby's rap that was DEFINITELY not fit for six year olds, hit completely differently and she felt her face flood with colour as she sank further in her seat. Yet even as she watched in embarrassment, she was impressed with the sharp execution of the steps and the rather impressive hip work. The song finished and Camila sat silently, gripping her purse.
"I love the song by the way, it's on my housework playlist. What it's not, however, is suitable for a group of six year olds, either to hear or especially to see, um, in that style of choreography."
"Oh my Lord, Nora, I'm so sorry! I took her with me to rehearsals, I didn't even think...."
Nora laughed. "Hey, don't be embarassed! To be honest, her dancing was spot-on! She had it all down pat, and she'd included some of the steps we were doing in both jazz and hip hop classes. It was just a little too, um, sexy for this age group. So perhaps you could have a little chat with her to explain the reason."
Camila stood and held out her hand, and Nora shook it. "I'm so sorry Nora, I really am, I..."
Nora was shaking her head and waving her hand as she saw Camila to the door.
"Really, it wasn't that bad, but unfortunately there were a few of our stricter dance moms there, so there were complaints made, and I had to tell you."
