Camila and Shawn are barely acquaintances, not really friends, and they never did write IKWYDLS, but they have had crushes on each other forever, and destiny is a funny thing.

An extra-long Alternative Universe Shawmila One-Shot Love Story

Camila locked the bathroom door and sat on the floor, her heart breaking. How had things got so bad? All she wanted to do was make music and she felt like she was being blocked at every turn, and receiving no support. There was one place she knew she could get it though. She picked up her phone and went onto the app and sent a message.

BananaGirl97: Hey, you there? I need you.

She waited, knowing he would have to get the notification and then find a place to answer her. She could never really work out his time zone, it could be the middle of the night or daytime where he was, but they never discussed their locations, it was one of the Big Nos, along with their names, or anything else that might identify them. And that was why this online friendship worked and had done for four years.

Muffins2Go: Hey, you OK?
BG97: No, crisis. Talk to me. About anything.
M2G: Guess you can't tell me whats happening.
BG97: Bitchy friend stuff.
M2G: Is that still going on?
BG97: Yeah. It hurts.
M2G: I'm sorry bb
BG97: Distract me
M2G: Remember the time when we had that meme war? And you won with the screaming baby thing?

She smiled, remembering being so bored, and homesick, and lonely in the tour bus and trading memes with him until her belly hurt from laughing.

BG97: Hahaha yes that was stellar
M2G: How about that time I sent you a photo of my toe?
BG97: I have it framed beside my bed, it's the only photo I have of you.
M2G: I have that one of your hair. Like 3 strands of it.
BG97: Hahahaha my best angle.
M2G: I knew you'd be brunette.
BG97: You did not. Like how?
M2G: Because I love brunettes.
BG97: Yeah I bet you say that to all the brunettes.
M2G: I don't chat with anyone but you bb
BG97: Aww me neither
M2G: I don't know what I'd do without you. You're like the voice inside my head.
BG97: OK dude that's weird, you know I am a real person right?
M2G: Yeah, I know. Sometimes I'd like proof though, you know?
BG97: Maybe one day
M2G: Maybe. Feeling better?

There was some banging on the door. "Camila, come on, we have to get ready for the show."

BG97: Yeah, thanks, ily.
M2G: ily2

She closed the app and stood up, looking in the mirror. Chatting with him never failed to make her feel better, but the urge to know more about him, to meet him, got stronger all the time. She knew that she would have to break it off one day, or meet him, or both. Or neither. Shit, she didn't know. It just seemed weird that her best friend was a boy she had met in a chat room when she was fifteen.

She stood backstage at the Jingle ball in Philadelphia for the interview, standing at the end and feeling so separated from the rest of them, who were all touching and interacting. She only interacted with the host's dog. It was awkward and uncomfortable and she was out of there as soon as she could get away. The pre-concert entertainment was finished and she looked across the backstage area and saw him. Shawn Mendes, wearing black pants and a grey long sleeved t-shirt that clung to his muscles and made him look so hot. She hadn't seen him in real life for a long time, but he made her heart beat faster and her temperature rise. He was chatting with Charlie and Alessia and he looked over and caught her staring, and she was so embarrassed. He smiled at her and she smiled back.
