THE GIRL group had been together for years. They had grown up with each other. They had spent all their time together over summer holiday, made even more convenient by their parents moving closer together.

They spent the summer before their fourth year preparing for the Quidditch World Cup. They spent the summer before their fifth year mourning and losing parents one by one to Voldemort's grasp. They spent the summer before their sixth year at Muggle parties, though they had to spend the last month of school convincing Pansy to go. They wore outfits their parents would scold them for if they were ever home. They wore matching green lipstick, showing that they were always a group, no matter how separated they got.

The girls walked on to the platform the day their sixth year began, green lipsticks in their luggage, scowls and smirks at the ready.

It was the year of the serpents.
