I cautiously peeked out of the doorway, glancing down the dark hall. " Why didn't I turn on the lights earlier? Idiot!" I muttered to myself, cursing my stupidity and choice to read all day. Squishing my eyes shut I took a deep breath " Just have to get to the phone and call the doctor... Yeah, I can just ask him to come by for dinner" I reassured myself. I slowly counted to three, then sprinted down the hall. Hitting my knee on something, I stumbled and fell to the floor. Whimpering from the pain in my knee I scrambled up and made my way to the phone. A scratching noise brought a sudden shriek of fear, ripping its way out of my throat. I ripped the phone out of the cradle and furiously dialed the number while feeling my way around for the light switch on the wall. Once my hand reached the switch lights flooded the hall and I sunk to the floor holding onto the phone for dear life as it rang. More scratching noises came from an unlit part of the house and hot tears ran down my face. "Please pick up doctor!" Begging I crossed my fingers in hope he would answer. After a few more rings I was beginning to loose hope. "Hello?" Relief ran through me like a drug once I heard his voice on the other line. "Doctor! Oh thank god!" I cried, my stray tears turning into a sudden downpour. "______? What wrong? You sound upset" he asked worriedly. " I-I'm scared doctor. It's dark and I hear noises a-and" "I'm on my way. Don't go anywhere." He cut me off and with that the call was disconnected. I pulled the phone away from my ear and tried to calm down. Taking in a deep breath I pulled my knees to my chest and wrapped my arms around them. My knee still hurt but I ignored it for now. I sat there for a few minutes taking deep breaths and calming myself down. There was a loud knock on the door and I whipped my head towards it "Come in!" I called, my voice cracking. I heard the door open and footsteps made their way to where I was. "______?" Looking up, I saw the familiar mad man with a bow tie that I had come to love. "Doctor-" I shrieked when I heard the scratching noise once more and in an instant he was on his knees beside me. He wrapped his arms around me and held onto me tightly and I closed my eyes, clinging to him. "Are you ok? Are you hurt anywhere?" He pulled back a bit and searched my face. I shook my head "I'm fine. My knee caught the table but other that that I'm alright." He sighed in relief and stood up, pulling me with him. Holding me to his side, he walked slowly down the hall towards the origin of the noise. Turning the corner into the dark living room he let go of me and with one hand he reached for the light switch and the other for his pocket. In an instant light flooded the room and he had his sonic screwdriver out in front of him. Once satisfied, he lowered the sonic and walked farther into the room. The scratching noise came from the window and I cowered in fear as the doctor whirled towards the window with his sonic. He sighed and lowered it. "______-" he laughed lightly "It's just a tree branch scratching at your window". He placed his sonic in his shirt pocket and turned to me smiling. I sighed and ran a hand through my hair. "Sorry for making you worry doctor.." I said sheepishly as I rubbed the back of my head. He walked towards me and tousled my hair "Oh it's quite alright! As long as your ok" he smiled and pulled his hand away. "Well then. I guess I'd better pop out of here then" questioned more than asked as he touched his nose with his thumb. My heart started racing and I nodded. "Off you pop doctor" my voice cracked as I managed a smile. Smiling back, he walked passed me and stopped in the doorway. "Till next time then" he turned away and walked out of the doorway and down the hall. My feet started to move on their own it seemed and I ran down the hall. "Wait!" he turned around and I threw my arms around him. He tensed up as I buried my face in his shirt but he soon wrapped his arms around me, holding me tight. "What's wrong?!" He asked in surprise, I looked up at him and a sob escaped my throat. "I-I don't want you to go! I want you to stay here! Please" I begged hiding my face in his large coat. He sighed and set his chin on top of my head "How about.. I stay here and keep you company then, eh?" He pulled back and lifted my chin with his hand making me look up at him. I sniffled and nodded, he wiped a tear away with his finger and smiled "See? There we go. Cheer up now!" Then he kissed my forehead and let me go "Come on, I'm tired of standing" he said grabbing my hand and pulling me back towards the living room. He sat on the couch and pulled me down then wrapped his arms around me. I layer there for a second then slowly wrapped my arms around him and sighed in content. I laid my head on his chest and he kissed the top of my head. "Comfy?", I closed my eyes "Yeah. Just promise you won't leave me?". He chuckled and tightened his grip on me "Never. I'll stay right here and protect you."
