he sat down next to her on the cold sand, the waves lapping up to touch his toes. "you look sad." he told her, looking up at the stars.

"i am sad." she responded.

"why?"

"i said goodbye." she took a fistful of the sand and let it fall between her fingers. "i finally said goodbye. and goodbye means forgetting, right?" she leaned into him, and he wrapped an arm around her shoulders. "i don't want to forget, luke."

"you won't forget, kels." luke whispered.

"i miss my grandma." kelsey sniffled, wiping her nose on her sweater. "i miss her so much."

luke's heart ached for her. "i miss jo too, babe. she was a great woman."

"she loved the ocean, you know. that's why i love it so much. i want to get lost in it. go where no one can find me."

"i'll swim the ocean for you, kelsey."
