I sat on the grass outside my house in Holmes Chapel the sun was warm and the book I was absorbed in was an escape from the rest of the world. The world where I was teased at school, I wasn’t as pretty as the other girls. The world where I was the nerd, I’d sit in the back of the class and answer all the questions. The world where I was in love with my best friend, while he was oblivious to my feelings.

I was so engrossed in the book I didn’t hear the car door slam next door but I sure felt the body that tackled me a few seconds later. I smiled up at him feeling the boy’s arms wrap around me. “Mick!” He yelled in my ear his head resting on my shoulder as he rolled us over on the grass “we just adopted a kitty!” he said his face close to mine our cheeks brushing, I felt my heart speed up, I hoped he wouldn’t feel it.

“Awww what are you gonna name the kitty?” I asked laying my head on his shoulder. Even though we were young and many of our friends would have thought the action weird, Harry and I had always been close.

“Dusty” He said smiling.

“But that’s my nickname!” I said nudging him.

“I know, I named her after you.” He said throwing his arm over me. “That way I always have a part of you with me.” He was such a flirt even though he was so young, my mum always said he was gonna be trouble when he is older if he kept it up.

I laughed, “Good to know?”

“What? Is it so bad that I want to keep you?” I shook my head ‘no’ “Good! Because I like you to much to not have you close.”

“What do you mean?” I asked as he rolled to his side his whole body pressing against my side.

“I mean that, I want you to be mine.” He whispered looking down at me his hand brushing my blonde hair out of my face.

“Oh.” I didn’t know what else to say. “Why?” I asked myself I didn’t realize I’d said it out loud till Harry answered.

“Because you’re my best friend and I don’t want you to just be my friend anymore when I feel more than friendship for you” He said I smiled looking down at my feet. “Mick?”

I looked up at him “Yeah?”

“Mick, will you be my girlfriend?” he asked biting his lower lip as he ran his free hand through his hair, a nervous habit of his.

I wound my arms around him pulling him close for a hug, nodding against his chest “Yes, Harry, I’d love too be your girlfriend.”

He face split into a wide grin as he looked down at me. “Awesome. Wanna come and meet Dusty!” I nodded as he grabbed my hand lacing our fingers together pulling me with him toward his house next door.

The scene around me shifted to a year later in the summer before our 7th year. I was just waking up as a movie ended, I was lounged on the couch with Harry my head resting on his chest.

He was watching the end of the movie while running his hand through my short blonde hair. I smiled nuzzling into his neck. He lifted my chin to kiss me as the movie ended. “Time to make cookies?” I asked.

He nodded pulling me up with him as he got off the couch. I walked into the kitchen to pull out the ingredients, stretching my arms above my head as I yawned. Harry put the DVD away as I read over the cookie instructions.

I started measuring out the ingredients and placing the dry ingredients in one bowl, before starting on the wet ingredients. Harry started mixing the sugar and butter together as I put in the other ingredients, eggs and vanilla extract. Harry pulled me close kissing my hair before dipping his finger into the mixture and licking it clean “Harry! That has raw egg in it, yuck!” I said squirming in his grip.

“That doesn’t stop it from tasting good” He smiled dipping his finger in again before wiping two lines of the mixture on my face under my eyes.

I yelped pushing him away grabbing the jar of flour and throwing a handful at him. His face turned white as the flour exploded in his face and on his clothes. He waved his hand in front of his face backing up toward the bowl of dry ingredients. He coughed as he ran into the bowl it clanged, he looked down and saw it smirking he grabbed it throwing a handful back at me. I turned away seeing what he was going for, I turned back to throw another handful at him grabbing the jar and hugging it close. As Harry took handfuls out of the bowl hurling them across the kitchen at me as I did the same with the flour.

By the time Harry ran out of ammunition the kitchen was foggy with all the flour in the air. It looked like it had dumped snow indoors. He walked up to me smiling “There is never a dull moment with you Micky” he said bending down to kiss me but when he got close he shook his head in my face the flour flying out in a cloud. I laughed backing out of the kitchen.

As soon as I was out of site, his mom walked in from the opposite door, needless to say she wasn’t too happy with him. We got kicked out of the kitchen for the next 6 months.

My surroundings faded again to the park as I got flashes of Harry and I together, kissing, him pushing me on the swing, sitting on top of the monkey bars, climbing the tree in the park, sitting on the bridge that ran over the creek at night, picnics and cuddling wrapped up in a blanket star gazing. It flashed to the night we woke up together in his bed after a school dance, dinners out together, him singing to me on my rooftop, the promise ring he gave me, late nights cuddled up together, we had never needed anything more than each other.

Then my test results came in and I left it all behind. I left him behind.
