Chapter Thirteen |
THE DRIVE to the airport, where Kai had oh so gracefully landed the plane, wasn't as bad as I expected. I was awake this time and the views were stunning. We had about ten minutes left before we'd arrive at the plane and thinking about Kai's flying was making me nauseous.
"So, this Klaus guy, you've mentioned him before." Kai says as he glances between the road, the necklace in his hand which he refuses to put down, and me.
"Yeah." I nod.
Kai cocks an eyebrow at me, "And he's supposed to be scarier than me?"
I let out a small chuckle as I compare the two, "Trust me, he is."
"Doubtful." Kai murmurs under his breath, then clears his throat, "So, who is he exactly?"
"A hybrid." I begin to tell him, "Half vampire, half werewolf. One-fifth of the Original family, although two are dead, so... one-third?"
"And if he's as high of importance as you're claiming him to be, why would a half-vamp, half-wolf want to compel us?"
My focus moves towards the views outside and my brain begins to rifle through a large assortment of memories that include Klaus. I unintentionally let out a sigh and he immediately catches on, "You're hiding something."
I pull my eyebrows together, defensively, but refuse to look at him, "No, I'm not."
"Then why aren't you looking at me?" Kai asks.
"Because maybe I've seen enough of your face." I retort.
Kai breathes out a laugh, "Oh, Clem, you can never get enough of this face."
As he says the last part, he brings his face close to mine and I instantly shove it away with the palm of my hand making him laugh harder. Kai places the necklace between his legs and pulls out a nutrition bar. He gnaws on it like a chipmunk, "Back to Clause -- "
" -- Klaus." I correct.
"What are you hiding?" He asks. I remain silent so he growls, "Clem, tell me or I'll -- "
I cut him off, " -- okay, fine, but stop with the threats."
"No promises." Kai responds with an obnoxious grin that I want to slap off his face. How we were once friends is beyond me.
I gather my thoughts before I begin, "I won't go into too much detail but... my dad died saving Klaus' life, that's why my mom hates supernatural creatures so much, especially vampires. Klaus was grateful, he told my mom that he'd protect her but she had other ideas, she asked him to protect me instead, her only child. From that day Klaus has protected me from a lot of things, but I still hate him because of all the things he's done to my friends and my family."
Kai remains silent for a moment as he stares at me. He shakes his head and returns to looking at the road, "Except you don't hate him, do you?"
I frown, "What?"
He lets out a chesty laugh, "Oh, little Clem, I see it in your eyes, you're not so innocent."
