Chapter Eighteen |
(This corresponds with Season Two of The Originals)

"NEW ORLEANS?" Kai repeats.

I push myself onto my knees before standing up, staring ahead of me in disbelief. Feeling the cold winter wind batter against the exposed parts of my skin.

There's no more cave, no more boarding house, no more sun or eclipse. It's no longer May 10th. I exhale a huge sigh, "We did it, Kai! We're out."

I turn to him to see his expression as he stands up. His face has washed over with surprise and relief and he lets out a laugh, "We did it."

He moves closer to me, "But how are we in New Orleans and not Mystic Falls?"

I take his closed hand in mine and raise it. I uncurl his fingers, revealing the necklace, "I assume the other necklace is still here in New Orleans. Let's go find it and some answer, shall we?"

Kai furrows his brows at me, "Where do we even start?"

"I just saw a familiar face." I tell him, "Follow me."

I begin to walk towards the end of the alleyway and Kai falls in line by my side. I turn my head a little to glance at him, "And let me do all the talking, you've been couped up for eighteen years, we don't want you getting all choked up and murder-y."

"No murder?" Kai playfully scoffs, "What kind of place is this?"

I momentarily smile, "Not yet, anyway. Only under necessary circumstance."

Kai looks at me in surprise, "Hold on, are you actually agreeing to me murdering someone?"

"I was kidding." I respond as we hurry down the street and after the person we were following. They take a right turn causing me to usher Kai along, "Come on."

We make our way into a bar on the corner of the street. Taking a few steps into the building, I scan our surroundings. The bar is full of people, a sight that felt odd for a moment after being in a place with only one person for over a month.

"This feels strange." Kai whispers, "You sure we're really here?"

"Yeah." I exhale, looking for the familiar face amongst the drunken tables, "It's gonna take a while for you to adjust. Just stay close to me."

My eyes take a while trying to adjust to the atmosphere and the lighting of the room. Like Kai said, it felt strange, almost unreal but maybe that was an affect of the magic we'd just been thrown out of.

I can't spot the face I was looking for. I sigh, "I think I lost him. Let's try somewhere else."

As I turn around to the doorway, my body is jolted with a sudden shock of fear. A gasp escapes my parted lips and my heart picks up speed. The man infront of me smiles down at me as I hold a hand to my chest, "Stalking me?"

I try to calm my breath, "That never gets any less terrifying."

"What are you doing here, Cleo?" He asks. I almost question the name and then remember that's my nickname, one that Kai had refused to call me but I had been so used to him calling me Clem for the past month it'd kind of stuck to me.
