Arrival

The cab climbs up a bumpy, cracked road overgrown with shrubs. It's as though it's been decades since anyone has taken this route. Your surroundings radiate an ominous feeling. The forest's trees leer at you, you feel as if they're about to engulf you, their long twisted branches grasping for the car. What was left of the evening daylight seems completely obstructed by the density of the trees, the infinite number of towering silhouettes shadowing the ground. The forest seems to never end. It's almost as if you've stumbled upon another world.

An uneasy feeling rises in you and causes your stomach to churn. To your right Doctor Jiminez isn't helping with his constant chatter. You shiver as you look out the window. 'Maybe it's not too late to change my mind..'

Suddenly, the trees, the road, everything becomes narrow and tight. It's as if the trees are a snake constricting its prey. The branches sound like claws as they drag along the exterior of the cab. It is pure black outside now, the car's headlights the only source of light to pave the way. The feeling this gives you, it's like there's some kind of omen telling you not to go any further.

"Doctor, is there another route?.." you ask, your heart flip-flopping in your chest.

"No, I'm afraid not. Forgive me, I should have warned you all beforehand that it can get rather perilous in these woods. I believe we're almost there," he says unaffectedly. He's apparently been through this before and this persuades you to relax.

Just as quickly as the woods had thickened, they dispersed, and an abrupt clearing unveiled a massive, ornate mansion. Your mouth gapes in awe, this was the last thing you were expecting.

It is constructed of thick stone which is covered in silvery dew. A cracked fountain poses before it with towering columns adorning the façade. Despite the mansion's classic beauty, the moonlight drapes a soft glow over the home, creating a vaguely creepy aura. Nevertheless, it's rather charming. It almost seems plucked from a different time period.

You slowly and carefully step from the car and soak in the essence of the home, observing its elegance as you head towards the front door. It's so quiet, every step you take echoes the crunch of the leaves beneath your feet. The smell of pine hovered in the air. The whole area is simply intoxicating.

Jimenez exits the vehicle himself and soon joins you at your side, the cab pulling away to leave you both alone.

"After that trip through the woods, I thought it was going to be something like a creepy cabin," you say, still ogling the manor.

"Marvelous, isn't it?' he replies as he raps his fist on the door. "We'll be lucky if Mr. Victoriano isn't all the way down in the basement."

Time creeps forward and life within the mansion appears stagnant. Jimenez sighs, "Let's go fetch him."

You stand behind him as the doctor opens the door. You anxiously trail him like a lost child. You don't feel comfortable just walking into someone's private home..

As you step inside the spacious main hall, you immediately notice how dimly lit it is. Even the elaborate chandelier suspended above you only offers a somber glow. The room is sparsely furnished except for a few royal-looking vases dotting the room here and there. Formidable double doors stare at you from across the room.

"Ruvik! Where are you?" Jimenez mutters to himself. He motions for you to follow him through the double doors.

You're met with an incredibly long corridor. Several doors are scattered along the walls with candle sconces neatly aligned beside them. The hallway seems infinite. You and the doctor continue to search for Ruvik, the doctor periodically calling out his colleague's name.
