“Jenna” Michael called from the kitchen for the fifth time, taking the bread out of the oven. Ah! It smelt delicious. The smell of Michael’s special ‘MJ french toast’ warmed up the house. It was the first day of Jenna’s college and Michael wanted to leave no stone unturned in making it special. He had prepared a wonderful breakfast, made her a good luck card and brought a bunch of yellow roses, her favourite, just like her mother’s. everything was set, except, Jenna was still not ready. Michael placed the tray of bread on the dining table, removed the big oven mitten and started to walk over to the hall room, when he saw Jenna coming down the stairs.

“There’s my little princess. I was just coming to call you. You don’t want to be late for your first day of college”

“dad! You gotta stop callin me that. I ain’t you’re ‘little princess’ anymore”

“aww, look at you, talking like you’re sixty years old. You’re always going to be my little princess, no matter what. Come on now, I’ve made you’re favorite breakfast, you don’t want it getting cold”

“you know Dad, sometimes I feel like you still call me a princess just so that you can get the pleasure of calling yourself the king”

“Hehe” he laughed and engulfed his little baby into a tight hug.

“Daddy!” she spoke in a muffled voice against his chest

“Yes princess?”

“isn’t breakfast getting cold now?”

“oh Jeez! I completely forgot about that. Let’s go eat”

Jenna took a bite of the soft buttery toast and moaned, chewing it delightfully slowly enjoying the sweetness of the honey and saltiness of butter “umm…the MJ french toast is delicious as usual Dad. You’ve got to patent the recipe”

“can’t, it’s your grandmother’s recipe. I was the only one of her nine children who loved cooking. I would be next to her every time she baked something and that’s how I got so good at it”

“grandma sure is a good teacher”

“hey! I’m a good student, ok?”

“ya sure” she said with complete disbelief. There was a knock on the door.

“Jessie! Hello boy! Come on in”, Michael said opening the door

“Hello Uncle Jackson, It’s nice to see you”

“you too Applehead”

“Is Jenna ready?”

“yes, she’s just having breakfast. Come in, join us”

“thanks Uncle J”

They made their way back to the cozy little kitchen. Michael had put together the warm little house with a lot of love. Jenna was three when Michael lost the love of his life, his wife and the mother of his child to a car accident. It left an irreplaceable void in his heart but he vowed to himself, never to let Jenna feel the same way. He would be a mother and a father to his little princess. And with the break of every single dawn Michael would strive to keep up this promise.

“hey JayCube!” Jessie greeted, sitting down and helping himself to a french toast

“hi Jess, ready for college”

“As ready as I can be. I can’t believe I’m finally going to be studying Literature and literature alone without a side serving of math and science”

“haha, you really do hate math”

“well the stupid subject doesn’t like me very much either, it’s like Aryabhata had invented zero specifically so that my math teachers could score my tests” he replied chewing scrumptiously on the toast “Mr J these are amazing as usual”

“Thank you, Jessie,” Michael looked up from the newspaper and gave him a little nod

“oh shit! It’s almost 7:30. We have to go Jess, I don’t want to be late on my very first day”

“mmm” he replied absentmindedly taking another piece of the toast

“Jessie!”

“oh, sorry Jen, ya… I’m all done. Come on”

“oh my little princess is all grown up, going to college” Michael said putting the paper down and getting up along with Jessie and Jenna

“Daddy!”

“No, I know, No crying” Michael said wiping off his eyes with the face towel

“aww Daddy” Jenna said hugging him “I love you”

“I love you more princess”

“I love you most!” Jessie exclaimed and Michael and Jenna both turned to look at him standing there with his hand stretch out holding a piece of the French toast and professing his love to it

“take the whole plate Jess… consider it a ‘first day of college’ present, now go, you don’t want to be late” Michael said amused with Jessie’s obsession with the French toast

“I love you Uncle J, you’re the king of toast, bread and buns. Bye”

"Hehe, Bye Jess" he laughed

“Bye Daddy” Jenna waved as she walked towards Jessie's car

“Bye Jenna, have a great day”
