👑Chapter 1: Alex

Alex sleepily turned off the alarm clock and rolled to her side.

Today was Saturday, and she wasn't willing to let anything stop her from oversleeping. She was already falling back asleep, and that's when she heard it: the ice cream truck.

She jumped out of bed and ran downstairs and into the street like a mad woman. She searched for the ice cream truck, but it was nowhere in sight.

"What the what?" She questioned, she was certain she heard an ice cream truck. That's when she heard it again, but behind her, she turned around and scowled when she saw her best friend Henry playing the tune from his phone.

"I'm going to kill you!" She said she was running towards him, but he pushed his hands forward, trying to stop her from coming any closer.

"I'm sorry, okay, but this was the only way to get you out of bed," he said defensively as he watched his best friend's nose flare in rage.

"Well, I don't want to get out of bed; I want to oversleep!" She yelled and walked back into her house. Henry is following behind her.

"Come on, you promised we'd hang out at the new gaming centre in the mall," Henry said as he watched Alex lazily slump onto the couch and grunt.

"Yeah, yeah, but we still have like six hours before the mall opens," she said, searching through channels with the remote.

"It's 3 pm!" he yelled, making her jerk a little.

"Really?" she asked, pursing her lips. Henry just rolled his eyes in response.

"Fine, let's go," she said, getting up from the couch and walking in the direction of the door.

"Your going in your PJ's?" Henry asked in disbelief. He knew his best friend was a sloppy person, but he didn't think she'd actually want to go out in a stained, huge tee shirt and wrinkled sweatpants.

"And so, today's Saturday, I don't need to wear my Sunday best," she said, giving him a stern look.

"Yeah, but aren't you even a little concerned about your stained tee?" He asked, scrunching up his nose in disgust. He wasn't sure what stained her shirt; he just hoped it was lemonade and not urine.

"Urgh!, fine," she said, then carried a large hoodie from the couch and wore it over her t-shirt.

"Better mom?" she asked, and Henry let out a sigh, knowing well that that was the best she was going to do.
The two arrived at the mall, and it was jam-packed with people. "Wow, who knew people go to the mall so much?" Alex said in disbelief. She didn't come to the mall much except to play games or buy limited edition drawing sets.

"Here it is," Henry said, running to a game that was in the arcade.

"Isn't she just... beautiful?" He asked, running his hands down the gaming device called Suzy. Suzy was a game Henry and Alex loved playing as kids. They loved imagining that the zombies from the game were real and took it as their personal quest to eliminate all zombies.

They were so excited when they found out there was an updated version.

"I would have said this is awkward, but this is the closest thing to a female that will let you touch her," Alex said, pushing him out of the way with her hip, making her the one standing in front of Suzy.

"Hurtful words, Alex," Henry said, making her laugh.
"Let's kill this thing!" Alex said, and high-fived Henry. They began playing, mentally noting all the changes that had been made in the game.

"This game is..." Alex started saying but stopped when her eyes landed on Zach. He was with some of his friends from school; they were playing one of the games in the arcade.

"The game is what?" Henry asked, and when she didn't reply, he turned to look at her and caught her staring at Zach.

"Really Alex?" He snapped her back to reality.

"W-what? Sorry, I was just."

"Eyeing Zach like he's a snack"

"Well, he is," Alex said with a smirk.

"Can we just focus? We nearly beat our high score. Henry said, but Alex was barely listening.

She'd been in love with Zach for as long as she could remember.

She confessed to him when he was 9, but he turned her down because he said he wanted to marry a princess and she wasn't one. Even though they were just kids, that memory remained with Alex all through these years.
She even developed a little hatred for royals because of it.

Alex stopped breathing when Zach and his crew started walking in her direction. She felt a little self-conscious and wished she had dressed up a little more.

"Hey Zach," she said with a wave, but he walked past her to a girl who was standing behind them. The girl threw her arms around him. Her heart tightened at the sight, so she turned away.

"Alex..." Henry called out in a comforting tone.
"Let's go home," she said with a forced smile.

Alex got home late. After what she had seen at the mall, she decided that the only thing that could cheer her up was ice cream, so Henry took it upon himself and bought two ice creams for her and one for himself. She slumped on her couch, pulled out her phone, and dialled her dad's number.
"Hello, who's this?" He asked once he picked up.

"The queen of sloppy," she said dryly.

"Alex, sweetheart, how are you? I miss you," he said with a happy tone.

"I miss you too, dad," she said, suddenly feeling sad.
"Sweetie, what's wrong?" her father asked, sensing his daughter's distress.

"Nothing" .sniff. "When will you be back home? "she asked, wiping her tears away with a quick sniff.

"Tomorrow will be the coronation of the princess, so I think I'll be able to come home after," he said, and Alex felt an immediate change in emotion.

"Really! That would be great!" She said with excitement that it had been a month since she saw her father; he was the chief guard of the Royal Palace of Syana. Syana was a small but very developed and working country, and her father has been working there for years and rarely comes home because of the royal family, Another reason she hates royals.

"Yes, well, good night, sweetie," he said, cutting the call.

Alex closed her eyes in an attempt to fall asleep, but she couldn't because her heart was racing in anticipation.
