Imagine you're reading a typical young adult romance novel.
The book starts with our main character dreaming about her childhood friend. She doesn't remember his name but she remembers what he looks like. She remembers that he was really important to her but after she moved, they never saw each other again.
Then she wakes up.
While doing her morning routine, she thinks about how she really wants to meet her childhood friend. She remembers that she had a crush on him and since she's only had a few crushes in her life (a couple boys from school, her teenage neighbour and a guy from a commercial) she doesn't think she'll find love anytime soon.
So, she's counting on the chance that she'll meet him again so she doesn't have to wait till she's like in college to get a boyfriend.
So she goes to school and it turns out there's a new transfer student. He introduces himself to the class, and while his name doesn't sound familiar, he just reminds her of someone she knows. He looks pretty cute, too, she takes note of that.
So she zones out of class and just spends the whole day trying to recall who he reminds her of.
At the end of the day, they have art class or something and she gets partnered with the new kid.
She tries to start drawing but her pencil isn't really working and it's annoying her.
But then the cute boy is like, "Oh, you're holding it wrong. You should hold it like this." And he shows her the correct way to hold the pencil.
She follows his suggestion and now the pencil is working.
Seeing her success, the boy says, "That was easier, right?"
And she mentally gasps. Cause oh my god, he reminds her of the guy from the commercial who she used to have a crush on.

Wasn't that a great plot twist? I just thought of that like an hour ago lol.
And if you didn't get the joke, the punchline is that the reader is expecting this mysterious boy to be her childhood friend since that's a trope in YA romance novels. But he actually just looks like the guy from the commercial.
