On Our Own

It's been a week since I ran away. Even though I knew I had done what I needed to do for myself I still felt so bad for leaving everyone I loved. Especially Grant he loved me so much and I had left him without even as much as an explanation.

The farther Buddy and I traveled the more pain and guilt I felt. What was I going to do. I was slowly running out of supplies and wasn't getting any closer to a town to restock my supplies.

One lucky day I was wandering through the woods looking like a stupid lost idiot and then I saw a sign. " Yes!" I yelled pumping my fist in the air. The sign read Maple Ridge. That was a town dad went to sometimes for local auctions.

I entered the town and tried to find the nearest stable. I went down two or three roads before finding a beaten down barn that was in desperate need for repair. I looked around and saw no one anywhere around. I looked in the barn and saw there were six stalls. Two which were ruined. The other four were in great condition. There was a small loft with a musty bed. There were two large paddocks and a small corral outside where I had tied Buddy and Arinda.

Once I had settled in Buddy and Arinda I ripped off the bedding and grabbed some money from my back pack. I saw my phone in my bag. I had so many missed calls from family and friends, and also just random people. I knew that the police could track my phone so I did something about it.

I ran almost two miles out of the town. I sat my phone on the ground and grabbed a rock. I chucked the rock at my phone repeatedly. My phone finally shattered into small pieces, barely being held together with small wires I picked up the phone and dropped it in the small creek which ran into a waterfall. Even if they did track my phone they would find it in pieces at the base of a creek.

I hiked into town and stopped at a diner. "Welcome to Granny's diner!" a long legged girl with black hair and red highlights yelled out while taking an order from a young guy my age. He flashed a white pearly smile. "Come sit down, I'm not going to bite." he added as he saw my uncertainty. I slowly pulled out the chair and sat down. " Hey, I'm Ben." he stuck his hand out I front of him. " Kor..." I hesitated to tell him my real name in case missing signs showed up. He raised his eyebrows on suspicion. " My name is Alana." I said firmly grasping his hand. The girl with red highlights walked back up to our table. "Okay here is your chicken and ranch club sandwich, and I got you potato and bacon cheddar cheese soup." she set a steaming bowl of cheesy deliciousness in front of me.

Ben and I devoured our meals as soon as they arrived. Him dipping his finger in my soup and me taking large chunky bites of his sandwich. I had only known Ben for about and hour but somehow someway I felt like I had known him for forever.

"Unfortunately as much as I enjoyed myself, I have to go." he took a large over exaggerated sigh and gave an understanding nod. "Can I have your number?" He asked winking. I hesitated to tell him who I really was. "Mine is broke I'm so post to get a new one, it's being shipped in but I don't know when it will be here." I made up a quick lie. "Okay, well maybe I'll see you tomorrow." he smiled that dazzling smile and opened the door for me.

When I got back to the barn I had bought shavings for the stalls. Hay and grain, along with a pink and blue bucket. I had washed the sheets and patched the bedding before getting a new pillow and pillow case. I got some paint and started to paint the barn red and white along with my bedroom floor yellow and the walls a light stormy gray.

All day no matter what I did I thought of Ben. I don't think of my family or Grant or the horses just Ben. I didn't know what was wrong with me. I had a boyfriend. I had thought about it all day before I finally figured out what was wrong with me. I was in love. With Ben.
