I'm in my final year of finishing my bachelor of arts in literature. As a senior I'm taking Bio 101 which is a general education course that I've procrastinated taking. I'm not a science major, I'm a writer and for the life of me I can't figure out why it's necessary for me to study biology. The only reason I could see this as beneficial to my future career is if I ever write a story involving something scientific in nature, which is highly unlikely.
I signed up for the class begrudgingly at the last minute, and of course the only open session is an early morning class. I mean seriously, I'm not a morning person and I don't want to be taking this class anyway. Therefore, I can't be more irritated than I already am, or so I think.
I leave my small apartment at 8:00 am to walk to class. I want to give myself enough time to stop for some caffeine on the way. Class starts at 9:00, I should make it in plenty of time. I have no desire to be that one student who shows up late for the first day of class. I don't want to get on the professor's bad side the first day.
I'm grateful there's a short line at the coffee shop on campus. This is probably the only benefit to taking an early morning class. Everyone else in their right mind is still sleeping, not quite ready for their caffeine fix. Typical university students aren't known for being early risers.
One by one, the barista shouts out the orders.
"Order for Molly, Mocha with three shots of espresso."
That would be me! I reach for my coffee at the counter when a masculine and well manicured hand grabs it before I have a chance to get it myself. His hands are beautiful and under most circumstances that would send my mind spinning. I have a thing for hands, a kink one might say. But it's early morning and you don't mess with my coffee. He's immediately been placed on my shit list.
I take a quick glance at the coffee thief who's dressed like a college frat boy, in flannel and a snap-back. He's much more attractive than the average but still he's on my shit list.
"Excuse me but I think that's mine. Kindly release the coffee and no one will get hurt."
I proclaim in a slightly sarcastic yet serious tone in the same breath.
"My apologies, you must not be a morning person or up for jokes. I won't come in between you and your coffee again. However, I have a thought...Molly. You could just invest in some Molly to get you going in the morning. However, that may become a bit expensive, I guess coming to class spacey and rolling may be a bad idea. Scratch that idea stick with the caffeine, it's a safer drug."
"Wow, a British accent, attractive, and wit. What a lucky guy! And just so you know, I've heard every Molly joke in the books so you're a little late with that one."
"So you think I'm attractive, eh?"
"Don't get too full of yourself. It's obvious you know you're attractive, your conceit is dripping from your pores."
"I take offense to that."
"No need to be offended, that's my jaded view of men in general. It's nothing personal. I have to go..."
"So does this mean you prefer the ladies?"
"Nope."
I retort as I walk towards the door with my back to him.
"Can you I see you again Molly?"
"If you're lucky you'll run into me someday."
I stride out the door with a strange amount of confidence. I have a weakness for a man with a bit of arrogance which is ridiculous, but couple that with a British accent and my resolve is non-existent. I make no effort to look back, I just want to get through this semester without any further distractions. Graduation is just around the corner and I'm working on my first novel. I don't have time to be distracted by a male companion.
