Prologue

I looked over at Jack, his muscular frame occupying most of the space that my tiny car offered. Moose, my crazy Rotweiler, lay contentedly in the backseat. We were going to the dogpark halfway across town. Unfortunately, our town was split by a river, which had one access bridge across it. The highway traffic was horrible today, and the crash that happened about an hour ago had the bridge held up significantly. So we sat in the car, listening to the radio and trying not to fall asleep.

Suddenly, the car began to shake. Moose began to whine and jack looked at me.

" What's going on?" I asked. He just shrugged and looked up at the people ahead. Then the bridge blew up.

It happened so fast. Air was rushing at my convertible and blowing mine and Jack's hair around. Debris began to fly in every way and the cars ahead were sinking into the murky water below, fast. Jack grabbed Moose's leash and got out of the car. I just sat there in shock. Jack came back and dragged me out of the car. The bridge was collapsing and we were only thirty feet away from the beginning. Something hit me from behind, hard. It sent me tumbling without my breath. Jack kept running, oblivious to my fall. I passed out, but not before I saw Jack get hit with a hunk of concrete.
