I slowly opened my eyes to see Autumn above me, her hands on me as if she was trying to wake up, her entire body trembling out of fear. "What happened..." my voice was raspy and cutting out, but I still got the point across as Autumn stopped shaking me to cover her mouth and started crying.
"Oh my god! I thought you died!" She said in between sobs, that made me remember what happened.
"How did we survive?" I scrambled to sit up, but when Autumn saw I was struggling, she rushed to help. When we both stood up, I noticed what had happened. Yes the house fell on us, but what was more shocking was we were in the middle of a circle, like a meteor hit right where we were but didn't dent the ground, void of no rubble in its radius. Not only that, but every unbuilt house that was in this construction site fell over as well, making the place look like a scrap yard. "How did this happen.." I looked around, not sure where to direct my words to.
"I'm not quite sure, I didn't see much when you protected me, but I noticed a bright light, did you see it too?" She had asked, calming down a bit from the earlier fright.
"Yeah, it was nothing I've ever seen before, but it was too bright to see what caused it," I stated, remembering both the yellow light and mixture of green and red lights. "Do you think a person caused this?"
"I don't think so... but I think we were targeted specifically, as if they knew we were..." she trailed off and then immediately let go of me out of anger, making me fall to a kneel and wince in pain, "Did you set us up?" She yelled, pissed off.
"What no?" I said between gasping for pain.
"Then why else did you bring me this far?" She fumed.
"Calm down, I brought you here to talk about what we discussed earlier, trust me if I were out to kill you or whatever I wouldn't have protected you from that falling house," I rolled my eyes, thinking it's stupid that I'd have to explain myself, "Besides I don't even know what that was and even if I did, I'm too stupid to know how to do or make that. I'm also a semi bad liar,"
"Hmmm, you make a valid point, but why would anybody else target us out here? Or even want to kill us? We're seniors in high school, we haven't even started life yet to have enemies," Autumn sighed and went back to helping me up, slinging my left arm over her shoulders so she supported my weight side by side.
"I don't know...but we gotta get out of here, I don't think I can handle protecting you from another building," I put my hand to my head as I started getting a gradual headache.
"Well excuse me for inconveniencing you," she said sarcastically, helping us maneuver over the rubble.
"Sorry sorry," I grimaced from the pain as we wobbled, "Being on death row over here doesn't sit that well for me"
"I can get behind that," She sighed, "But aren't you like, one of the toughest dudes at school, don't you get in fights and get beaten up a lot?"
"It's usually the other way around, and even if they did it's not like this," I answered
"I see," she said before we both went silent and concentrated more on getting out of the situation.
Before we can make it to the exit, though, I gasped as the pain from my headache worsened to the point I collapsed, more so where Autumn couldn't support me and we both went down. I cursed under my breath as my head hit the rocks and started to throb, "Are you okay?" Autumn sat up, worried and confused as to why we both fell.
"My head..." I said between pants, "It hurts...so bad..."
"Oh my god, you might have gotten a concussion," she dug through her pockets before cursing, "I lost my phone, I can't call any help,"
