It was the next day when my phone vibrates silently, against the brown wood of my desk.
It's third period, the time when Javier started to text me more throughout the day because he apparently has bad connection in the first two hours of school.
I smile at the notification that read, "Javier sent you a snap!"
I carefully sneak my phone and hide it in the space between the table and my thighs. I type in my four digit password and opened the Snapchat app.
Javier sent me a picture of his shoes and asked how my day was going.
I reply with, "Awful. Math teacher has got me doing so much work." I press send and wait for a snap back.
He answered in seconds.
"I'm sorry, that must suck. We're not really doing anything in my class right now." He said.
We were texting back and forth for the rest of the hour then the bell rang loudly in my ears.
It's lunch for me.
I went to the cafeteria and sat with my closest friends.
Josh, Kadence, Dalia, and Jesus.
I chose the seat across from Josh and in between Jesus and Kadence. Dalia sat in between Josh and Kadence.
My one slice of pizza rests on my plate, untouched for a good ten minutes. Josh reaches for it but Kadence swats his hand away.
"Josh!" She exclaims. "Stop eating everybody's food. Val could be saving it for later."
Josh rolls his eyes and looks at me. "Well, are you saving it for later, Valerie?"
I shake my head no and push my paper plate to the opposite side of the table.
Josh is very outgoing. He's got a high self esteem too. Beautiful dark skin and thick, black rimmed glasses that compliment his hard eyes. Oh, he's also gay. So is Jesus.
Dalia laughs. Dalia is the one person at the table I'm not so close to. But I still love her. She's probably the funniest too.
I decide to go on my phone to kill the rest of the ten minutes we have to eat.
I see that Jav texted me. It wasn't a snap.
javier: hey ik it's only been a few days, but i was wondering if you wanted to hang out after school today? :)
I grin.
Kadence playfully pushes me and asks if my "boy from Bhens" was texting me. I nod.
I tell Kadence everything so she was the first person who knew about Javier. I wouldn't call her my best friend, but she's definitely someone I trust a lot and enjoy their company.
Now that I think about it, I don't really have a best friend. I have best friends but not one specifically. I don't have a person that has stuck by me for years or a person that I call my number one.
"Let me see what he said," She looks over to my phone and reads the message. "Ou, so you guys are going to hang out today?!"
I don't answer her right away. I reread the message in deep thought.
My parents would never allow me to have a boy over right now. They think I'm too young to have a boyfriend.
I look up at Kadence again then back down at the screen.
If they don't know it wouldn't matter, right?
