Chapter 13

Katie's Pov:

The word echoed through my mind. I couldn't think about anything else. Werewolf. Werewolf. Werewolf. My dad was a werewolf. Did that mean my mom was one, too? What about me? Was I a werewolf? No, I didn't think so. After all, I think I would have noticed if I was a freaking dog! Then there was Hudson. I had to figure out what the situation with him was. The leader guy said he was my mate, but what does that mean exactly? My expression must've looked very comical because the whole chamber was soon filled with the deep, throaty laughter of the council members.

"Are you okay, my dear? You seem rather frazzled" called the red-cloaked leader. I continued to stare into open air. How many other people that I knew were werewolves also? Mr. Price? Mackey? Trent? Danny? What if everyone in this town was one? It was right about then that my asthma kicked in, and my breathing became labored almost to the point of hyperventilation. I doubled over, and put my head in my hands. The old rickety chair creaked as I rocked back and forth.

"So I see you're not okay, then?" added the leader, amusement seeping into every word. Truthfully, I was not okay. I was totally freaking out. How would you feel if your whole perception of what exists and what is a fairytale was suddenly ripped apart? I looked up at him. His deep eyes were now filled with excitement.

"A-a-am I one, too?" I trembled, struggling to get out each syllable.

"Ha, what do you think?" questioned the leader in a patronizing tone. My breath hitched. I hoped with all my heart that I wasn't a monster like him, but I just didn't know.

"I-I hope not" I replied shaking.

"And why is that, young one?" asked Leader Dude his eyes narrowing slightly. I recoiled back a little.

"I-I don't want to be a monster like you" I tried sneer, but it sounded weaker than I meant. He seemed to consider that.

"Well then it is very lucky for you that feeble women like yourself cannot become 'monsters' like us" he scowled harshly. I flinched but let out a sigh of relief. I wasn't a werewolf, and neither was my mother. Somehow that made me relax slightly.

"So that means that my mom wasn't one either?" I asked.

"Ah, Danielle McAllister! She was truly enchanting. It's a shame she died, but to answer your question, no, she was not one of our kind" said the leader his eyes taking on a dreamy look.

"You knew my mom?"

"Yes, my dear. I know everyone. Your mother was particularly well-liked among the werewolf community, not unlike your mate's own mother" he laughed tauntingly.
