"KOYA LET'S GO!!" Andreas yells as he sprints away from the fast-approaching angry mob. Koya just stands there in shock, too afraid to move even an inch. The rest of the friends began to run away. They already made it a block further when Isaac turned around and noticed that Koya was still standing there. Isaac proceeded to turn around and run back to where she was, as the mob was almost upon her. He picks her up like a sack of potatoes and flings her over his shoulder to make their escape.
"Ha! Bastards." Mari shouts back to the crazy people chasing them. This seemed to fuel the mob's anger.
One of them yells, "We're just here for the kid! Hand him over and you can leave unharmed!" They are slowly gaining on the small group.
"We don't know who or what you're talking about!" Cleo replied, shouting over her shoulder.
"Koya, are you ready for me to put you down?" Isaac asked, "We might be able to outrun them."
Koya quickly answered, "Yeah," and immediately Isaac puts her down and they keep going.
Cleo looks around, "Where are we even going?!"
"I know a place," Mari says, "Follow me!" Mari starts heading down a side street to the right. Suddenly shots start firing off in their direction. Everyone starts running faster and Cleo screams a bit. They are all focusing on following Mari and getting away from the danger. Koya hears a thud behind her and turns around to see Andreas on the ground clutching his leg. She stops, but then her whole body freezes and she is unsure of what to do. The others keep running, not noticing Andreas got shot.
Andreas looks up and says, "Koya, help!"
Koya stays exactly where she is as she starts hyperventilating getting flashbacks from a similar situation that had occurred three years ago. The crowd is getting closer, making Koya more and more anxious.
Andreas yells trying to get her attention, "KOYA PLEASE!!"
At this point, the rest of the friends had turned down another street, out of earshot, unknowing of what was happening behind them. Andreas was panicking, he could barely feel the pain in his leg but he could see blood seeping through his jeans. He knew he had no chance of escaping alone, his only hope is Koya.
"Koya please," he whispers.
One Hour Ago
"What's up fuckers?" Andreas said as he casually walked into the living room.
"Watch your profanity," Mari responded, not bothering to look up from her book.
"Eyyyyy," Andreas and Isaac said simultaneously, pointing finger guns at each other while Cleo rolled her eyes at them.
Koya walked in behind him, her eyes glued to her Nintendo screen.
Andreas looked over at her before returning his focus to the rest of the group, "Soooooo, who's making dinner? I'm hungry."
"You're always hungry, dumbass," Cleo retorted.
Andreas shot her a pout, "Why must you hurt me in this way, oh so lovely Cleo?"
Cleo rolled her eyes again. Mari looked up from her book, "He's right though, it's almost time for dinner."
"NOT IT FOR GETTING FOOD!" Andreas screamed startling Koya.
Isaac immediately followed with, "NOT IT!" And then Cleo and Mari.
Which led to Koya looking up and saying, "Um.... what?"
"Guys that's not fair, Koya wasn't paying attention," Cleo said, always the mom of the group.
"Oh shut up, she's never paying attention. She's always spaced out and never listens to anything we say," Isaac said. Koya looked at him, tears forming in her eyes, as she retreated to the chair she always sits in.
Mari looked at her sympathetically and then at Isaac, appalled, "Of course she's spaced out! She's been through a lot of shit and she has suffered more than any of us! Do you expect her to just forget about everything and act like she's okay?!"
"Sorry, you're right.... I just didn't get enough rest last night and I've been pissed all day because of it," Isaac said, looking down at the floor.
"What kept you up last night? You're usually asleep by ten," Cleo asked, slightly concerned.
"Ummmm... vine videos.........." he replied. Everyone looked at him taken aback before they all burst into laughter. Even Koya, who seemed grateful for the change of atmosphere.
Andreas looked at him trying to contain his giggles, "For real bro?"
"Yeah..." Isaac said blushing slightly.
The mood lightened a bit, the laughter having cleared out the tension in the room. Cleo got her laughter under control and smiled, "So anyway, who's getting dinner? I'm getting a little hungry, too."
Mari set her book down and sighed, "Let's just all go. We'll take forever if we have another round of this."
"True dat," Andreas responded.
Cleo added on, "Meet back here in five minutes?" Everyone either nodded their head or gave a quick 'yeah.' And with that, they all got up and began to get ready. When they were done, the friends came back and left the building chatting amongst each other.
"Where are we going anyway?" Andreas questioned.
Cleo looked at him and said, "Well let's try the wealthy area this time, I think the group of Malvados has moved out."
"I didn't think you were a risk-taker, it's unlike you to even consider venturing into that side of town. Buuuut I say let's give it a shot," Mari chuckled as Cleo glared at her. The rest of their trip was spent mostly in silence, they were all entranced by the wreck of what was left of the world around them.
Everything around them was abandoned and worn down. Every step they took they heard a crunch of litter, nothing having been cleaned in years. Cars were turned over from riots and multiple stores had burn marks showing that they were one of the shops that the Malvados had attempted to burn. Occasionally you could see drops of blood leading to alleys that no one would dare look down because they were afraid of what they might see. Somehow, despite all this, the sky was clearer than ever. Pollution has gone down and you can easily see the stars shining at night.
What was left was a reminder of the lives they once lived. In a pre-apocalyptic world where they could use cell phones and watch TV. Where they had families and friends that loved them. Over time most of them accepted the fate that was probably bestowed upon those that they cared about. Now all they had was each other and they relied on that.
"Are we there yet?" Isaac said grumpily as his stomach growled.
Mari rolled her eyes, "Almost."
After a few more minutes spent in comfortable silence, Mari remarked, "It's just around this corner," which was followed by shouts of excitement coming from Andreas and Isaac. The group of friends turned the corner in high spirits only to be faced with a group of Malvados. Everyone's faces dropped, their smiles replaced with looks of fear.
Looking at the crowd with a panicked expression Andreas muttered one word: "Run."
