“YOU SAID YOU WOULD PROTECT THEM”

The room was still, too still for Scaf.

He was too used to the chaos of the battlefield, things going fast, no one staying in one place.

Because if you stayed still you die.

And if there was something he wanted to do right now is kill everyone in the room.

“And we did captain, we promised we would keep your family safe as long as you followed the orders”

The governor didn’t even raise his head from his desk.

His voice was even, it wasn’t cold, it wasn’t warm, it was the kind of voice people take when they say things that don’t matter when they don’t care.

“So explain to me, governor, why they are dead”

Scaf was trying his best to keep his voice low.

Because if there was one thing Scaf wanted more then painting the whole room in red, it was to avenge his family.

The governor finished writing his letter, put it in an envelope, sealed it, and lend it to his valley before standing toward Scaf and looking at him right in the eye.

Scaf straightened, not because he was scared, but because he wasn’t used to people looking at him in the eyes without having to raise their head.

“As I said” the governor's voice was still even, but there was something more, like a little tone.” we would protect them as long as you obeyed the orders, and in the last report I have here, you disobeyed direct orders from your direct superior”

And then Scaf caught what it was.

Coldness.

Scaf eyes widened.

“But I saved the missions If I followed the orders everything we have been working for months would be gone !”

Scaf couldn’t believe it, all of these years of loyal services to the crown.

All these years of sacrifice.

It was all gone because he did the right thing

“Yes we acknowledged that in your report, and he was dealt with the right way, he got transferred to another section where he will work as a desk officer”

“So you’re telling me these bastards got to have a nice retreat for almost messing up an operation that took years to be set and my family get killed because I saved everyone ?”

Scaf’s voice was vibrating with anger.

He clenched his fist so hard blood was dripping from his palms.

His jaw seemed like it was gonna destroy all his teeth.

The governor didn’t seem frightened at all.

“Careful captain” The governor’s eyes were hard, there were no emotions in them, no compassion, nothing.

“It’s not our fault” he continued with his always even tone “if some pieces of information have leaked out about where your family was living”

He then looked at the blood dripping from Scaf’s palms.

“Oh well, you better not waste my carpet with your blood, just one piece cost more then what you could gain your whole life, leave at once, it’s over now”

Two guards held Scaf by the arm and tried to get him out as the governor gave him his back and was going toward his desk.

Two seconds, that’s all it would take him to kill both the guards and the governor, no one would hear a thing.
