"Do you know the answer, Eden?" asked my teacher, Mrs. Mills. I did some quick calculations and answered yes. It ended up being right, just like always. I don't know if it makes me a genius of something, but I am not challenged in the least here at Dutton High School, and it's the school for the gifted and high IQ scores. Everyday is pretty much a bore here, because I just pick things up faster than everybody else, and something that takes me ten minutes to learn takes them three hours. Everyday here is pretty much a bore. Every. Single. Day.
Right then, the bell ran to signal the end of the day. I went straight home to see my mother waiting for me. She was standing at the kitchen counter, talking to two men, who were drinking water out of my mom's best cups.
"Eden," said my mom.
"Ms. Quill," said one of the men.
"Uh, hi."
"Ms. Quill," said the other one, "We know that you don't know who we are. That's okay, you shouldn't yet. You will call me Dr. Carter and him Dr. Nolan. We are research scientists at the hospital. Of course, you never hear or see us doing things for that hospital, because, like everybody else, what we intend does not become the ending purpose. We are working on a very long term project, and you happen to be subject AB. We would love to stay and discuss, but we must bring you back to the Base." Before I could say anything, they pushed me gently towards their van.
When we reached the van, Dr. Nolan said to my mother, "Sorry, ma'am, we're afraid you can't come. Confidential, remember? Don't worry, you will learn the plan when we release it to the public in about three weeks." He leaned in and whispered to her something, and she looked at me and nodded.
"Mom, come on. I'm sure we can make room," I say worriedly. I was scared to get in the van, not knowing what was going to happen. I am a person of schedule; I like to plan what will happen next. Things like this scare me and drive me crazy.
"Eden," she started, "it's okay. I trust them." She handed me my phone and winked. "Just in case, though."
They told me to get in the car, and I obeyed. The men sat in the front and I crawled into the back. I settled in, buckled my seatbelt, and relaxed for a second. I have no control. This "plan" is already figured out and I don't have a say in it. I turned around to look back at my mom through the window to see another person. A boy. A boy was staring at me with utter confusion. I screamed.
