"Hey!" I shouted, chasing after Zane, "Why haven't you been returning my calls? I've been trying to get a hold of you for the past week."
He reluctantly turned to face me. "Just drop it, Eric. I can't talk now; I've got somewhere to be."
"Dude, can't you just take a second? I've been worried about you. You've been ditching school, your parents even called me asking what was wrong. Zane, talk to me, please. Why are you avoiding everyone, even me?"
Tears started forming in his eyes, "She sick, Hannah I mean. It came on fast, she was fine and now... it's terminal. She's got a couple of weeks, if that." He looked me in the eyes, seeming angry now, "You didn't notice she not in school anymore? You didn't even think to talk to her? She's my girlfriend Eric."
I was dumbfounded. "I- I guess I just didn't know her well enough to call. That's where you've been, with her? Why didn't you tell anyone? Why didn't you tell me? Why go through that alone?"
"Of course I've been with her. As long as she wants me around, I'll be by her side. The only reason I'm even here is to pick up her stuff." He motioned to the bag on his shoulder, "Bye Zane, I'll see you later, I gotta go." Before I could say anything else, he jumped in his car and sped off.
