Patton checked his compass and panicked. They were going the wrong way. They were headed to the Spirit's Triangle rather than to port. He had to let the captain know.
"Captain! Captain!" Patton called as he ran over to the wheel. The captain rolled his eyes.
"Yes, Patton?" He asked sharply. "What is it?"
Patton gulped but wasn't deterred by the captain's threatening demeanour. "Captain, we're headed the wrong way. We're headed towards the Spirit's Triangle rather than to Lybax."
"Dear, dear Patton." The captain said, laughing hoarsely. "I am very aware of where we're going."
"Captain, the Spirit's Triangle is dangerous beyond belief and-"
"Patton," the captain cut Patton off, "do you know what one of the biggest trading items is in this day and age?"
Patton shook his head and the captain leered. "Mermaids, Patton. Mermaids of all and any kind. Their scales fetch a pretty penny and their tears are worth a small fortune. Just imagine it, Patton." The captain's eyes were shining with greed. "Captain J. Dagger, the first pirate captain to ever become a millionaire. Patton, tell me, do you know where we find mermaids?"
"The, the Spirit's Triangle?"
"Yes Patton! The Spirit's Triangle. And where are we headed?"
"The Spirit's Triangle."
"Correct! We catch a mermaid, we're rich. Now, back to your station sailor. We'll need to keep a look out for a flash of scales."
Patton walked away from Dagger, slightly dejected. Mermaids were dangerous creatures and his captain was too blinded by greed to see that. Patton's own brother had been pulled under and possibly devoured by a merman with a jet-black tail. The Spirit's Triangle itself was more dangerous than any living man could imagine and Dagger just wanted to sail blindly into its midst. It was pure madness. A tap on the shoulder jolted Patton from his thoughts.
"You good Pat?"
It was Virgil. The Cabin Boy and Patton's best friend. Quickly, Patton put on a fake smile.
"Yeah, I'm fine kiddo!"
"Pat, you may be able to fool Janus but you can't fool me. What's up? Is it about Emile again?"
Patton sighed and nodded. "Oh Pat, I'm sorry. I know it must hurt. If it makes you feel any better, I lost a brother as well."
Patton looked at Virgil, surprised. "Yep. Remy. He went missing when we were 6."
"Aw, kiddo-" Virgil held up a hand to cut Patton off.
"I don't want sympathy. I gave up on finding him a long time ago. What's Janus told us to do, anyway?"
Patton sighed again. "We're headed for the Spirit's Triangle. Captain says we need to find a mermaid."
"The Spirit's Triangle?!" Virgil asked disbelievingly. Patton nodded. "Does Janus know anything?! That's the most dangerous place-"
"I think he knows that full well." Patton muttered, turning away from Virgil and looking down into the water. "He just refuses to see it."
"I saw one! I saw one!" A boy, Edin, yelled. Edin was small, skinny and covered in freckles. He got excited very easily so the crew didn't know whether to take him seriously or not. Suddenly, another crew member, Daniel, yelled that he had seen a flash of blue scales.
