Chapter 4

As we come I into view of my apartment block I start to think; What is Callie going to say? I’m covered in bruises and an unpleasant blend of my own blood as well as others. This is going to bode well, isn’t it?

I untangle my arm from McTavish and start searching for my key. “Thanks, err, you can go now.” I say.

Before I have a chance to take a step toward the building McTavish pulls me into a slightly awkward hug. I can feel his hands resting on my lower back. Without thinking, my hands move from my side, under his arms and land just below his shoulder blades.

When my mind figures out what I’ve done I pull away from our hug that lasted for the shortest of moments.

“Why the rush?” He questions.

“Callie arrived yesterday; I’ve got to get back to her.”

“Ahh, Callie’s back, ay?”

“Yes. So I really ought to be getting back now.” I counter.

McTavish moves away and just when I think he’s leaving he looks at me and says “Look I get it.”

“Get what?” I ask. “That I don’t want to be trailed by anyone, let alone you? Or the fact that right now all I care about is going home and getting some rest?” I scowl, a little less polite than I initially started with.

“That’s exactly what I mean.” He chuckles. I must look confused because he feels the need to expand on his explanation. Of course I’m confused but right now I just want to go inside.

“You’re so independent, you’ve never relied on anyone else for anything. You walk alone, I get it. Even when you had that phase of ‘walking alone together’ it was always just you.”

“It makes things easier.” I answer simply.

“I bet. Well if you ever need anything just let me know.” He smiles with his words and I can tell he doesn’t mean his usual produce.

“Thanks, but it’s like you said. I walk alone.” And with that we both turn and walk in the opposite direction.
