I was slipping on my earrings, and smooth down my dress for the millionth time. I wasn’t going to remember what happened a week earlier. I was just going to go downstairs and enjoy my birthday. I looked in my reflection. I don’t know how long I stared. I just realized how much I’ve changed.
I got myself together the day after. I put it behind me while everyone left me alone. I didn’t need their pity. Dad was still alive. He just wasn’t going to make it today. Someone knocks on the hotel room door. Mom pokes her head through.
“It’s time hun. They’re all waiting for you.”
“Okay.” I walk over to her, and take her hand. She gave me a sympathetic smile.
“Sweetie, I know your dad’s death was har-…”
“He’s not dead.” I said. She stopped talking. I walk down the steps to the ballroom. I put on a smile. This was the first time I would’ve seen everybody I knew. They hadn’t seen me since I was taken away. More importantly, I was going to see Bradley for the first time. I missed him so much. The room my mom was leading me to was dark.
“Mom..” She smiled, and pressed what looked like a light switch. Everyone was here. I couldn’t help the monster sized smile on my face. They all looked at something in the corner of the doorway as I stepped down onto the dance floor. Kylie and my dance line stepped out. I started to tear up.
“Happy 16th!” They all shouted. We all went into a group hug. Everyone else was clapping. We were all basically crying. After they let me go, I searched around for somebody else.
“Where’s Bradley?” I asked. Everyone looked at each other. They all knew.
“He can’t make it, I’m so sorry.” Mom said. I was about to cry again.
“Why?”
“He said he was held up at work, and he feels terrible. He sent you this though.” Kylie said. She handed me a package wrapped in purple and silver, my two favorite colors. I smile at it, and set it on the table with the rest of my gifts.
“I’ll save the best for last.” I said. She smiled at me, then turned to the corner of the room.
“Hit it!” She yelled. There was a Dj there. He starts the music, and the lights dim, but the chandeliers stay shining. It was a ballroom dance party, but that was for later tonight. We planned on having this party for as long as possible. I start dancing with all of my friends. I was glad nobody asked me about my dad or Bradley. It was the perfect night, and everybody was dancing. Some people from my high school had to leave early, but I opened presents before them. The only ones I didn’t open were the ones from my family, dance team, Kylie, and Bradley’s. There was one more gift, but I didn’t know who that was from. There wasn’t a tag on it, so I left it alone, and put it with the others I didn’t open yet. Slowly, it was only me, my dance team, Kylie, and some of my family members. Lizzie was there as well. The doctors had said she was all clear, so she was all healthy. Instead of dancing with Bradley like I had planned, my dance was with her. Part of the time, I was crouching down while holding her on her feet because she can’t walk yet, and sometimes I just held her and spun her around. It was fun, and she was smiling and giggling. To be honest, so was I. Soon, she got tired, so she had to be put to be, and my grandparents went up to Mom and Luke’s room to put her to bed, and they would stay up there until they came up. I opened their gift first. The got me a nice summer dress, and some adorable shoes to go with it. I loved it, I loved them. I realized that night how much I loved these people, how much I needed them. I was just a little upset that the two other people I loved couldn’t be here. Soon, we started to mellow down, and I opened everyone else’s gifts. I got clothes, perfume, lotion, new point shoes, jewelry from everyone else. The last one I opened was from Bradley. I took a deep breath and opened it. It was a photo album. Of us. A picture from the first time we met, to the day I last saw him. There was a caption on the back of each one. The first photo, on the back it read,
