Piper scanned the classroom, trying to see who else was in her first period class.
First, she spotted her best friend, Annabeth. The girls smiled and waved to each other while their algebra teacher, Mr. Potter, droned on about the difference between mixed fractions and improper fractions.
Next, she saw Hazel Levesque, who was subtly trying to catch Frank Zhang's attention. Everyone seemed to know that the two liked each other- except them.
Piper also spotted all of her friends from middle school- Leo, Nico, Reyna, Rachel, Calypso, and of course, her boyfriend Jason, who sat next to her with her hand in his.
Piper still couldn't believe that Jason had finally asked her out over the summer. Since she had moved to his area at the beginning of 8th grade, she had always felt like the black sheep. The friend groups were so close knit, so Piper sat by herself every single day at lunch.
One time, this girl Drew invited Piper over to sit with her and her gorgeous friends. Seriously, they were almost flawless. They complimented her long brown hair, her smooth tan skin, and her eyes that seemed to change color every time you looked at them.
For a second, Piper thought she actually could fit in.
But the next day at lunch, all the girls fought over seats next to Piper. Usually, they fought over seats next to Drew.
Naturally, Drew immediately saw Piper as a threat to her popularity, and began insulting her outfit, her choppy hair, her lack of makeup-- anything that your normal queen bee would do to make you feel insecure.
Piper raced away from the table to the bathroom, trying to hide her tears.
She locked herself in a bathroom stall, put her head in her arms, and started sobbing.
After a few minutes, there was a knock on the door. "Hey," a small voice said. "Are you okay?"
Piper slowly opened the door, revealing a short girl with dark skin, curly hair, and golden eyes.
"My name's Hazel," the girl said shyly. "Do you want to tell me what's bothering you?"
Piper spilled her story, and in no time, Hazel cleaned her up and dragged her back into the cafeteria and to her table.
"Everyone, this is Piper. She's new, and she's going to sit with us."
Piper was quickly introduced to Percy, Annabeth, Frank, and Leo.
"And this is Jason," Hazel said, gesturing toward a muscular blonde with broad shoulders and bright blue eyes. He grinned at Piper, and she blushed.
For months, Piper had a huge crush on Jason, and everyone at their table knew it.
When they all went to a water park over the summer together, Jason and Piper were left alone for a few minutes while everyone else bought food. Their friends, of course, had planned it that way.
Jason ran a hand through his short hair. "Piper, I want to ask you a question."
Piper perked up, hoping that Jason was going to ask her the question she'd been dreaming about since she met him.
"Will you, uh, be my girlfriend?" He asked.
"Of course," she sighed, leaning in to kiss him.
"MS. MCLEAN?"
Piper snapped back to reality.
"Um, yes Mr. Potter?" she stuttered, embarrassed that she had gotten caught daydreaming.
Geez, it was going to be a really long year.
