Leo didn't know why all the girls weren't flocking toward him. He was totally hot! At least, in his own opinion.
As Leo walked to his second period class, English, he winked at Drew and her friends. Disgusted, they rolled their eyes and sauntered away, smirking at each other.
Leo shrugged. Their loss! Besides, he didn't care about them. He only had one girl on his mind.
He smiled as he walked into English, thinking about his dream girl's long auburn hair, dark eyes, beautiful smile--
Leo stopped dead in his tracks. There she was, sitting at the front of the classroom. She seemed oblivious to all the boys checking her out. She was obviously the most beautiful girl in the school, and everyone knew it.
Calypso was laughing with her friend Thalia, paying no attention to the boys practically drooling over her.
She caught Leo's eye for a split second and shyly waved. Embarrassed, Leo blushed and quickly glanced away.
"Class, please take your seats," said their English teacher, Mrs. Thompson. The boys immediately scrambled for seats next to Calypso. Since Leo was the last to walk in, he got one of the seats farthest away from her.
Leo sighed and plopped down. Who was he kidding? Calypso was amazing. She would never go out with a scrawny dork like him.
Mrs. Thompson began asking questions about their summer reading. Leo was glad he was at the back of the classroom. He hadn't bothered with the reading. What was the point? He had spent his summer working in an auto repair shop. For some reason, that was what he was really good at. At the top of the things he WASN'T good at was summer reading.
Leo pulled a small toy out of his pocket and started tinkering with the gears and wires, taking no interest in the classroom discussion on symbolism in "Of Mice and Men".
As he worked, Leo's eyes scanned the classroom, looking at his classmates. Connor Stoll sat on his left, drooling as he slept. On his right, Frank Zhang was diligently scribbling down notes as their teacher spoke about their first assignment.
Suddenly, a pink piece of paper on the ground caught Leo's eye. He slowly reached down and snatched it.
It read:BACK TO SCHOOL DANCE!
Friday, September 25
$10 Admission
Food and Drinks will be ServedA dance?! Why hadn't Leo heard about this? A dance would be the perfect opportunity to ask Calypso out for a fun night.
When the bell rang, Leo practically leapt out of his desk and over to Calypso, who was gathering her books.
"Hi," he said. Wow, that sounded stupid.
Calypso looked up and smiled. Boy, was she beautiful. "Hey, what's up, uh..."
"Leo," he reminded her. His spirits plummeted. She didn't even know his name. How in the world would she go to the dance with him?
"Well, I wanted to know if you'd like to go to the dance with me on the 25th." Leo nervously ran a hand through his dark hair.
Calypso seemed surprised. "No one has asked me yet, so sure," she nodded.
Leo's jaw dropped. "Wait, what?"
"I said, yes, I'll go with you," Calypso said slowly, as if she was speaking to someone who didn't speak English.
"Oh. Oh, awesome. Sounds great. Uh, catch you later," Leo stuttered, backing away. He tripped over a chair, causing Calypso to giggle.
Regaining his composure, Leo managed to wave goodbye to her as he walked out the door in a daze.
Was he dreaming? Did she actually agree to go to the dance with him?
Leo felt like singing horribly off-key. Everything seemed to be going his way.
