It seemed like only yesterday they ventured beyond the fences of Chicago and stumbled upon District 3. It all happened so quickly. The Reaping, the parade, training. Now came the ultimate test of ability: the Hunger Games. The flurry of events preceding their current condition were lost in their memories. Caleb was searching frantically for Cara, though he could not see her behind the metal horn they call 'Cornucopia'. He dared not step off the platform for fear of the disastrous consequences. Then it happened: a voice rang throughout the arena.
"Let the Hunger Games begin!"
Every person in the arena rushed off in a different direction of the perfectly round field in the midst of the woods. Not knowing what else to do, he followed suit. Except, he knew he had a purpose to run. And his purpose was to find Cara. The sight of fighting and killing of helpless people threatened to bring out his Abnegation side. He wanted to save them, to keep them from harm. No good would it do him, for he understood that they would only want to kill him as well.
Only then did he experience a deep terrifying feeling, and he feared for his life.
From behind him came a cry of frustration and fear and was followed by a gasp. Someone had crashed into him from behind. He turned around to find the person who had fallen.
"Caleb!"
"Cara!"
"You could have been anyone, but it was you! I have been looking for you everywhere!" Cara exclaimed.
"Yes. I have been looking for you, too," Caleb replied. "What do you suggest we do? Hide in the woods?"
"That would increase our chances of survival. After all, there can only be one team left before this is over," Cara decided.
Caleb thought there might be a chance they would be the surviving pair. A slim chance, but it was still there. The vast forest provided lots of protection and resources. If worse came to worst, he would die for Cara. However, his will to live prevailed and was strong.
"Ohhhh... Caleb. I was considering picking up a backpack, presumably containing helpful supplies, back in that field. I think I should go and retrieve it," Cara said suddenly.
"No. Who knows what's back there. I don't think you should go," Caleb warned her.
"At least you might come with me, if it concerns you." Her voice was so sophisticated, as most Erudites' were. That is what Caleb so liked about Cara.
Approaching the seemingly empty field, they discovered the backpack that Cara had described earlier was gone. A rustling in the leaves caught their attention, making them more aware of their surroundings.
"Cara, watch out!" Caleb cried. A tall, muscular boy and a girl with dark hair ran from the forest toward them, weapons wielded, poised to attack. In one final attempt to protect Cara, Caleb made himself a living barricade between the attacker and his partner. He stood in front of the one he desired to call his, one last time. A sharp pain in his chest was proof of the wound causing major blood loss. The last thing he saw was Cara falling beside him, annihilated and covered in blood.
He fell at her side, unable to hear the two cannons marking their deaths.~~~~~~~~~~~A/N~~~~~~~~~~~
Can you guess who killed them?
Comment if you figure it out.
Next chapter will be Christina and Will.
