*“Step outside in the midnight rain”*
She left her earbuds in, stepping out of the quiet building. The backpack weighed heavy around her gently sloped shoulders, edges of books digging into the weighty fabric and leaving little star-pointed folds of fabric on her back. A couple steps past the sheltered door, cold rain soaks into her clothing, street lights glimmering off the iridescent sheets of pure water. Rain is beauty to her eyes, each drop nurturing and soothing, mother nature having done her job carefully, each drop handmade and gliding through the wind.
*“King n' queen of the streets again”*
Hood pulled over her ears like a crown, she was the second person on the street. He fell into step by her side, hood pulled up as well, shielding their eyes from the torrent. The pair walked silently, the same confident posture and stride reflected between them on their journey.
*“Got young blood running through our veins”*
The air had a distinct charge, of young energy striking the ground at midnight, pulsing slightly with their steps. Nothing could stop them in that moment, their heads held high and their goals pushed higher above them. The energy would not tell you anything about them, but you knew what they were doing and where they were going deep at heart.
*“And it keeps us numb like Novocaine”*
Not a soul blinked in that moment, the rain seeming to slow with every step. It pulled time apart like taffy, showing the rain as small diamonds reflecting light. It nearly illuminated the street, but the figures kept moving, immune to the warping melt around them.
*“Alright, we can go all night”*
Walking, walking, walking on, as if the backpacks weighed nothing.
*“'Cause we got a whole lot of fight in us”*
They each touched their arms in solidarity, a pink band stretched across the smooth skin beneath their clothing. In synchrony, they touch base on the sidewalk at the end of town.
*“And I see a long road”*
The pair stood in front of a long street lined with tall buildings. It was nearly two in the morning, the rain still roaring against the pavement, their confiscated earbuds muting the torrents.
*“That we gotta follow”*
Footsteps fall beneath the sheeting rain, walking up the miles long road. In the far distance, they could see the light color of the capitol building, the silent light guiding them forward.
*“Before tomorrow catches up”*
They would need to make it there before the sun came up, else their apprehension would be immediate. There was a military in the capitol, leaving the rest of the world to be peaceful, but with the headphones, it was barely needed. No one knew to rebel.
*“Oh, just take it easy”*
Walking faster, the rain drops continued to slow around them, their now independent eyes allowing them to see the diamond-like clarity of pure rainwater. The moon glistened down to them.
*“Hold onto this feeling”*
Moonlight is the most powerful form of magic to them, it allows them to break free of the silence they had above their ears.
*“All our friends are leaving”*
It was nearing sunset, the stars starting to disappear above them. The stars were their last friends, they had to push everyone else for fear of being caught.
*“And we ain't got nowhere to go”*
Rose golden pink tinged the edge of the horizon in front of them, the capitol building right up next to them.
*“Caught up in the afterglow”*
They had the blue glow of the skyline reflected in their eyes, their hearts practically pushing out of their chests in tandem.
*"Can't stay here but ya can't go home"*
A door opened and in they went, knowing they could never go back after this.
*“Did you hear that line somewhere before?”*
Their last chance to find it, they searched the rooms again, finding nothing again. Except this time, they left on their own, without having the headphones taken from them. The pair broke from their paired trance, hugging in the tree they had made their home
*“And you look just fine on your own”*
Each gently spoke their names, smiling softly as the soft yellow light of sunrise hit them, dew forming on the tips of their noses.
*“But we look better in the afterglow”*
They jumped down, heading off to their separate houses and streets, the morning silent once more. Everything was well.
*“Alright, we can go all night”*
The next night, a gentle rustle brought them to, midnight hitting the sky like a dark blue paint splatter across their eyes.
*“'Cause we got a whole lot of fight in us”*
Red spatters across the ground as the headphones are picked up, arms concealed by a hurtful army of robots, people whose personalities have been stolen from them.
*“And I see a long road”*
A bright light envelops the world for them
*“That we gotta follow”*
They walk towards it together, touching hands softly
*“Before tomorrow catches up”*
The world explodes, their eyes going dark as their energy breaks free of their minds, shattering the broken white haze surrounding the world
And then it all goes dark for them while the world is just being revealed around them.
