Chapter Four: Question
"Willia!" Mordecai's voice came came the dressing room. He had agreed to go with her to clean up the store after it had closed down for the night, but somehow she had tricked him into dressing in a dress. He now stood in the small space with the hot pink prom dress on and a little tiara on his head. The dress came up just above his knees to reveal his dark hairy legs. He didn't like it at all.
Willia came walking in instantly falling down on the floor in a laughing fit. "Th-this i-is going on facebook!" She laughed holding her gut. Mordecai's face heated up as he tried to get her phone before she took a picture. But it was too late she had snapped a picture and buried her phone in her pocket. She rolled around still laughing on the checkered gray floor. Mordecai stood there not being able to get the grin off his face, she was sure one little trickster. He went back into the dressing room and changed back into his sweats and t-shirt. Coming back out he noticed she was playing with her curly brown hair looking at her phone. She had her legs tucked against her chest with arms wrapped around her knees. The strap of her shirt had fallen off her shoulder leaving a bra strap and her bare freckled shoulder. A little wave of emotion hit him as he stared at her bare shoulder. Seeming to notice his gaze she looked up giving him a small smile.
Walking over he sat on the bench with her. She let herself fall against Mordecai. Laying her head on his shoulder silence enveloped them. Time seemed to stop, the music played off in the front room. Turning his head Mordecai kissed the top of her head. Her hair smelled of a fresh shower and her skin smelled of honeysuckle. He breathed in deeper remembering their first meeting. "Hey, what are you thinking of?" Willia asked.
"Just thinking of the first time we met." Mordecai smiled when she looked at the ground smiling a little.
"I was shy back then wasn't I?" Willia said joining Mordecai in slipping into the memory that had happened three years ago.
A short girl with glasses walked by Mordecai who did not know both of them were heading towards the school library. She bumped into him as they both reached to open the door to go in. She looked up at him and smiled shyly. His heart thumped loudly in his chest for this girl he had never met. "You can go first." He said softly.
"T-thank you." She walked into the library trying to hide her flushed face.
A couple months later on valentines day a very nervous Mordecai stood in front of the library doors waiting for Willia. They had became great friends ever since that day they met. She came running up with her messenger bag bumping against her side. Her water bottle was attached to her hip. Her hair was in a frazzle. "Sorry I'm late, Mrs. Smith decided to hold me back to talk about coming in on Thursday to make up some quiz." She noticed Mordecai's offness. "Is something wrong? Do I have something in my hair?" She brushed a hand through her hair.
"No...but." He rocked back and fourth on his heels. Deciding to shout it out he said, "Will you be my girlfriend?"
Once again Willia was laughing, but this time her head was on his shoulder. "You were so nervous. You nearly gave me a heart attack." Her head bent back as she laughed.
Mordecai couldn't help but join in. She was his light in life, he had no clue what he would do without her. He got up pulling her up with him and into his arms. Her light skin paled in comparison with Mordecai's dark skin. She put her small hand against his face. Despite her being white and him being African-American they still made it work. He brought his face down towards her in a kiss. Their minds melted into one as they shared a moment.
His hand snaked around her neck as he pinned her against the wall. Her hands brushed against the back of his head as he kissed her harder. Hearts thumped in chests, breath came quicker, time seemed to stand still. It was when his hand started to snake up the hem of her shirt when the moment snapped. She pulled away slapping his hand away. "No way Mord." Her face was flushed.
"Why?" Mordecai was still breathing fast while he looked at her.
"You know why. I don't believe in making love before marriage." Her eyes softened. "I love you with my everything Mord. But I want to wait until we're married. Can you do that?" She looked at him. He sat down with her in his lap.
"Yes." He said softly.
A week later Mordecai sat outside on the porch playing on his guitar he had got from Willia on Christmas. A couple minutes later his father came out with a cup of tea and the newspaper. He had on the shirt Paige had given him, it said Real men drink tea in big white letters. At first they just sat there while he strummed off tunes on his guitar. Then his father sat down the newspaper and looked at his son. "What's on you're mind?" Derek asked looking at him.
Mordecai sat the guitar against the railing. It was starting to get dark outside leaving them in half darkness. Placing his feet on the ground he braided his fingers behind his head on his neck. In his head he tried to think of the best way to put what had happened last night in the store with Willia. "Well, I was kissing Willia-"
"And you got excited?" Derek cut him off. Mordecai's face heated up. "It happens when you love a woman Mordecai. It's natural."
"But it was awkward." He said trying not to remember, "No we didn't." He said answering his father's unsaid question. "She stopped me before anything happened."
Leaning forward Derek placed his elbows on his knees looking at his son. "Then what's the big deal?"
"Dad, I love Willia." Mordecai could see his father's smile.
"And I love you're mother. I love her enough to marry her, become a father four times over." Derek smiled more. "When a special woman comes into your life and as time goes by making you develop feelings for this woman, you start to stop caring for just yourself...you start caring for her. You constantly find yourself making sure that she's alright, that she's happy, and then love happens. It's a part of growing up. Life goes on." Derek walked over to his son and sat down putting a hand across his back.
"Then is it natural for a twenty-two year old want something most don't?" Mordecai looked up at Derek.
"That depends on what it is."
Mordecai sat up looking out at the distance. "I want to marry Willia."
