The Game

'Would you like to play a new upcoming video game?' A strange man asked Madelaine as she was walking along the promenade in Los Angeles. Not to be rude, she decided to ask what it was  about.

'There are six players and each player has a character. Each character will have its own individual quest to complete, but the other characters will have some of the information needed to complete that quest, so it's about team work,' he explained.

'Sure, I'll give it a go,' she said, 'but who are the other players?'

'We just have to wait for more people to come along and have a go, would you like to pick your character?' He offered her one of the controllers.

Madelaine thought that it was rather strange that someone had a random screen set up by the beach, but she figured that nothing bad could happen. It may even help with her acting because she could get to know different characters-she was an aspiring actress.

She picked up the controller and scrolled through the characters until one caught her eye. She had red hair, just like Madelaine, so she decided on that one.

Her name was Cheryl Blossom.

By the time Madelaine had chosen her character, another two people had arrived.

'Hi, I'm Madelaine,' she introduced, shaking the girl's hand. She said that her name was Vanessa.

She did the same with the man who'd arrived, he was called Cole.

About ten minutes later, the final three players had arrived. Their names were Lili, KJ and Camila.

Three boys, three girls, the game operator smiled; he had done his job successfully.

'So what's this thing all about?' Camila asked, she was the last to arrive.

The man, who introduced himself as Derek, re-explained the aim of the game whilst the others were selecting their characters.

'Okay, so who's my character?' Camila asked, realising that she'd be the last to choose.

'Looks like all have been chosen except for Veronica, so you will be her,' he said.

'So what are the different goals?' KJ asked, his New Zealand accent being noticed by the others for the first time.

'I'll start with Cheryl's goal,' he said, looking at Madelaine, 'Cheryl Blossom has just lost her twin, Jason, so your job, Madelaine, is to figure out who did it.'

'Wait, how'd you know my name?' She asked, she had deliberately not told it him because she was sceptical of who he was.

'I am the game master, you shall not ask me any questions about myself,' he warned, glaring at each player for a solid few seconds each.

'Onto Toni,' he said, moving his eyes to Vanessa, 'Toni's grandad is her only family and he wants revenge on Clifford Blossom, who stole his maple syrup business, costing him millions. Toni is fitter than her grandad so it is up to her to bring justice to this man.'

'Wait, Blossom is the same last name as Cheryl, is that her grandad or something?' Madelaine asked, confused.

'Clifford is Cheryl's dad, that's all you need to know,' he said.

'Moving onto Jughead, he is the leader of a gang called The Serpents and their enemy gang is called The Gholies, your job is to get Jughead to lead The Serpents to victory against the Gholies,' he explained, looking Cole directly in the eyes. He gave a little uncomfortable laugh.

'Betty's goal is to find her sister,' he said, moving further down the line of players, 'her sister, Polly, escaped a mental asylum and could be dangerous. You need to bring her home.'

'Archie, you're up next, your goal is to figure out who shot your dad, he was recently shot in a diner and you were there, but the shooter was wearing a black hood, it's your job to find out who it was,' he said, sighing.

'And finally Veronica. Your dad is the almighty Man in Black, also known as Hiram Lodge. He is a filthy criminal, but only you know about it, so it's your job to defeat him and expose him to the world, how you choose to do that is up to you,' he finished, taking a step back from us.

'Any questions?' He asked, no one said anything, 'remember to work together but maybe not stay together, you all need to take part in your own missions, good luck, you may now begin.'
