"Brooklyn told me that you weren't sure of what you wanted to do in terms of school," Victoria said casually. It was the day of the party and with two and a half hours to go we were sitting, doing our nails, at the table in the suite she was staying in. Everyone else had been kicked out so she could speak to me alone and we weren't allowed to see them again until we were at the party. "Don't let it trouble you too much. When you know you will know but I may have an offer for you."
"What kind of offer?" I asked carefully.
"For a job," she said. "I was speaking to a friend of mine earlier in the week. She works for Vogue and she mentioned that she was looking for someone to work in the social media department. It's only two people in it. I said I would ask you. I thought it would be something you might be interested in."
"Working for Vogue?" I questioned. "I mean - that would be amazing. Not exactly one of my dreams or what I expected to be doing but the opportunity itself would be phenomenal." I sipped my water slowly. "When would I have to start?"
"The person you would be taking over from leaves in the middle of September," she said. "You would start then." she watched me for a few seconds before continuing. "I have already discussed this with your mother and your father. They both like the idea."
"I will still be in Los Angeles with Mum in September," I said slowly. "I don't come back until the end of October. Mum has started talking about selling the London house for somewhere further out of huge city now that James is moving out. I won't have anywhere to live."
She laughed for a few seconds before stopping abruptly. "You can stay with us. It's not as if we don't have the room. Brooklyn would be delighted to have you there as we all would. I mean there would be rules regarding the two of you but nothing too harsh."
I stopped for a minute or two to think about this whole situation. I was being offered an amazing job and the chance to move in with my boyfriend and his amazing family? I mean, it would be a big change and I would probably get pretty bored of Brooklyn's moaning (he could be worse than a girl at times) but there was plenty of space in the house. I could just hide somewhere if he was annoying me. "Does my mother know what the living arrangement will be?"
"She knows everything," she said. "If you accept this then I can set up an interview for you when we are out in Los Angeles. This woman is out there quite often so it won't be a problem. If you don't like it then we will help you find something else."
"I will try it," I said slowly. I finished painting my nails with a top coat and waved them about so that they could dry quickly. "Does Brooklyn know about this?"
"No," she said. "I thought it would be best if you told him once it was all in place and certain. Maybe wait until the interview is over with? It's best to be on the safe side."
After entertaining ourselves by doing stupid impressions as we dressed for nearly two whole hours we were finally in the car on the way to the party. Victoria's phone buzzed with an email so as she read it I quickly sent a text to Brooklyn to let him know that we were on our way.
"Everyone who applied for the job got interviewed this week," Victoria said. "So instead if doing the interview in Los Angeles next month, Serena - who will be your boss if you get the job - is asking if you can do an interview on Monday evening over a video call. I will accompany you for it if you would like."
"That is fine," I said. "At least I won't have to hide anything from Brooklyn for too long. Tell her I will do it then."
Victoria quickly tapped a reply before putting her phone on silent and into her clutch for the evening. "It's a shame that your father couldn't come tonight. Why isn't he here again?"
