"Arrogance diminishes wisdom."

———————————————————————————

My heart raced as our eyes continued to be locked in place. I felt her stare into the deepest portion of my soul and pull out all of my hate and analyze it. I instantly began sweating and I felt at a loss for words, for more reasons than one.

It took me a moment, but I pulled my gaze away and I actually managed to spit something out. "Nice to meet you, Mikasa."

That earned me a fake grin, to which she replied. "Nice to meet you too. Looks like we're sitting next to each other." All I could do was shrug. "You might get moved." Part of me felt comfort in the thought of her being moved, she's already too talkative towards me. I don't know what the other part of me felt.

She doesn't know what I've been through or what I've done. She doesn't know why people pretend to like me, or why my name is popular tongue around these parts. Just as I was lost in thought, the bell rang, leading to Mr. Smith to come in and greet the class as usual.

"Good morning everyone, welcome to math, again." He started, as he usually did. Mr. Smith paused for a moment before continuing. "We have a new student, who came here all the way from Japan. Miss Ackerman, will you please stand?" He questioned, which initiated the girl to stand next to me.

"Yes sir, good morning." she replied, making Mr. Smith smile, "Would that seat next to Mr. Jaeger be satisfactory with you?" To which she just nodded.

"Very well, have a seat." He motioned for her to
Sit down. I sighed, making sure to do so in a quieter volume so she wouldn't hear me.

As class drug on, I kept seeing her glance at me, and eventually I turned my head to look at her, which caused an odd reaction. She continued to stare, she didn't look away. I wasn't used to that, I inspected her face, she had very wonderful features, especially her lips, and her facial shape. Her hair was cut short, and it suited her. I could tell she was doing the same to me.

My thoughts were cut short when Mr. Smith called out, "So, class." We both turned our attention towards him, causing me to scoff quietly.

I knew what was coming, and I was already dreading it.

"We have a project coming up, next Friday. That gives you 10 days. I will write the requirements on the board, copy them down. You will be working to the person next to you." He instructed, which made me and Mikasa to look at each other at the same time. We both shrugged.

——

After class, Mikasa stood up and handed me her phone, with the 'New Contact' option up. "For the project. We also should probably meet up at one of our houses tomorrow after school." Her voice was still empty and cold.

I took her phone and entered my contact information and my address in that option.
"Whatever works, I guess." I replied, my attitude obviously shining through.

My attitude earned me a sigh, and no further reply. I stood up, gathering my belongings to trek over to my next class, Science. I didn't see that mysterious beautiful girl until lunch.

——

Armin, myself, Jean, Connie, Sasha, and Historia all sat at our usual lunch table, I sat in silence while everyone gossiped, I got lost in my own thoughts. Was I really going to have a girl over? Or end up at her house? For a meaningless project?

Yup.

Armin waved his hand in front of my spaced out face, snapping me back into reality. "You sat by the new girl, and I saw you two talking. Are you project partners?" He prodded.

I stared at him for a moment before grinning a rare grin. He looked like an excited little child. "We are. I think she's coming to my house." I added, "she has my number now. It was an uncomfortable experience." My reply caused the whole group, who were listening in, to groan. "Dude, I think you're lucky honestly. She's gorgeous." Jean told me, his mouth full of food. How disgusting.

Sasha began pointing, "Is that her over there? Eating alone?" Causing us all to look.

She was right, the group began complaining about how she shouldn't sit alone and began prodding me to invite her over. "Fine, whatever." I snapped, getting out of my chair and storming over to her.

I pulled out the chair next to her and took a seat. "Hey, Mikasa. My friends want you to eat with us." I informed her, pointing over to them. She just stared at me for a moment, then looked over to my group of friends, who were all smiling and waving her over like idiots, then back to me. "I don't know about that."

I waited a moment, before I thought of an idea. I grinned a fake grin, and grabbed her lunch box, practically full of her food, and I began walking back to our table, zipping it up on the way.

As I sat down, I placed it in the empty spot next to me, and waited a moment.

To my surprise, she actually sat down next to me, instead of grabbing it and leaving.

She said nothing, which didn't surprise me in the least, but everyone began prodding her with questions and they were all talking at once. Jean was the worst, he was blushing, food still in his mouth. What a fool.

I glanced at her and realized they were making her uncomfortable. "Hey guys, shut it. Leave her be for now. She probably isn't comfortable talking yet." I commanded, which embarrassed everyone.

Because of me, we sat in silence for the rest of lunch.

After the lunch bell, while I was on my way to class, I felt my phone buzz, and I pulled it out to read a message from an unknown number.

It read, "Thanks for making me sit with you, and telling them to lay off. We can do the project at my house." I stared at it for a moment before receiving her address too.

I waited a moment before messaging back, "Why don't we just walk to your house together after school tomorrow?"

My phone buzzed again and all that was sent was;

"Okay."
