I WOKE UP GASPING FOR AIR. I was breathing hard, taking gulps of air as my senses slowly came back to me one after another. First was touch, as I realized I was laying on something cold, then came hearing and then sight. Blinking as my eyes acclimatized to the harsh bright florescent lighting overhead, I soon came to comprehend my current situation; I'm on a slab of cold metal, in a large room, and covered in a thin white sheet of fabric.
Where was I? What was I doing here? Who was I? These were the first questions burning in my mind as I tried to piece together my situation.
I sat up, dangling my feet over the side of the slab and see the deathly pale skin of my legs.
I looked down at myself and realized that I was completely naked, with only the thin sheet to cover myself with. I also noticed that my skin wasn't just pale, it was practically white. Running my hands over my head, I pulled long strands of black hair in front of my face. I was a woman, judging by the discovery of modest breasts and lack of a penis I made when looking down at my body. I seemed to have a lithe, slender build. In the middle of my torso, from my collarbone down to my abdomen, was a large wound, sewn closed in the shape of a 'Y'.
Gathering up the sheet, I wrapped it around my naked body and slid off the slab onto the cold floor. At first my feet were unaccustomed to the weight and I toppled like a downed tree hitting my head on the corner of the slab.
I regain consciousness almost immediately, sprawled on the floor with a throbbing temple. I dragged myself onto the slab and tried again. This time, I was more careful with my balance and it seemed to work. Now able to stand, I practiced walking while keeping a hand on the slab for balance, slowly at first, but then more confidently. As I exercised my newly awakened limbs, my mind went back to the three questions again, going through each individually.
Where was I? Obviously, I was in some sort of medical facility. A hospital or clinic or something.
What was I doing here? Given the sewn wound on my front, I must've come there seeking medical attention. Maybe I was in an accident?
Who was I? I... don't know?
Obviously I could reason, from how quickly I had solved the first two questions, and I was fairly educated, if I do say so myself, going by how I understood my answers to the first two questions. But the last question... that should've been the easiest, shouldn't it? I should know who I am, but it was a complete blank, like a portion of my memory pertaining to personal identity had been erased. I look down at myself again, and notice a band tied around my wrist. Written on it was one word...
Unknown.
I was an unknown. I don't know why, but the thought filled me with such despair, I backed into a wall, slid to the floor and started to sob.
A presence caused me to look up and I saw a man in a white lab coat, staring at me from what I now guessed was the entrance, eyes wide in shock.
"Uh..." I started, "Hhh...hheee-p... mii." I sobbed, babbling through my first spoken words
"Wh-what... are you?" he stuttered, shaking
"I don..." I whispered, my voice cracking from the strain. It was frustrating, I knew what to say, but it wouldn't come out the way I wanted because my vocal chords weren't working right.
"You need to come with me, I need to examine you." He said making his way for me.
"You... do-tor?"
"I'm a medical examiner, which is why I need to examine you right away," the man said as he stood over me,
